I bought this item for my son. He is 13 years old, 5.8 and 144 pounds. He is athletic. He wears XS because he does not like lose baseball pants. The pants are not short. They fir well. I would advise you to think about the size you usually wear on regular pants. My son is XS man which means 28 on regular man pants. These pants are not different. They run pretty much true to the size. I hope this helps.
