Has anyone just laid the heater under the tank and not used the adhesive to attach to glass at bottom of a Gecko tank?

We have used the adhesive for 2 years now and have had no issues

My tortoise's enclosure is made of wood. Can attached this on wood?

It likely won’t stick to wood. I use overhead Heat lights for turtles and tortoises. Remember if you do use a heat pad it has to be controlled by a thermostat.

Can I use one under the tank and one on the side?

yes you can, but they are very sticky and not exactly attractive. The sticky means they are on there good and tight. We did similar set up for our toad. You'll just have to monitor that it doesn't get too hot in the one area.
