Q: What’s the difference between the regular cascade and the cascade elite?

The elite comes with more media refills i.e. biofloss, carbon and sponge. I own the elite and wish I had bought the regular because the elite doesn't have a blue valve and a black valve. Both infants are black which makes it harder to differentiate "in" from "out."

Q: What is the difference between a Cascade filter and a Cascade "Elite" filter? The Penn Plex web site does even address it.

Only the color and they give you more filter media.

Q: Can this filter be used without the Bio Foam? I want the water to be biologically filtered in an aquaponic grow bed.

You do not need to use the bio foam that it comes with. The water will just pull through the tray if you leave it empty. However, the foam will hold good bacteria and is good for your tank.

Q: what is the difference between the regular and elite version

You get an extra box of filters, some carbon and a mag float with the elite.
