Works Exactly As Expected (Chromecast & Bluray Player) - Video Quality Surprisingly Good
If you're looking at this device and reading my review, you were probably just like me... trying to find a way to have an HDMI device output to an older TV.You see, I'm one of those people who still has an older CRT television. I use this primarily in the basement of my house, in my exercise area, to play exercise videos (like P90X). Well the problem is that my DVD player just busted. The DVD player was as old as the TV, but utilized RCA Composite inputs (yellow = video, red = right audio, white = left audio). So I ended up getting a Bluray player for free from a friend (it plays DVDs) but it didn't have RCA Composite inputs. Rather than going out and spending money to buy another DVD player (after all, they are pretty much obsolete), I decided to see if anyone made a converter from HDMI (what the Bluray player uses) to composite. That's when I stumbled on this device. After reading the description, I knew this was exactly what I needed. It's important to note that it CONVERTS HDMI to Composite. There are other versions of this product that do the opposite (convert Composite to HDMI), yet the module looks the same. Just be aware of what you're trying to convert. In the box, you get the converter, a USB cable (microUSB to standard Type A), and a manual. When I first tested the device, plugged it up to the TV and everything, I noticed that it would only output a blue screen that would flicker every couple seconds. I immediately thought the worst (that I got a crap product), but started reading the manual. In the manual, it says that a power supply was optional for the device. Since no power supply came with the converter, I just grabbed one of my phone chargers laying around the house and connected it to the converter using the USB cable that came with it. Instantly the converter lit up (there seems to be a power indicator LED inside it) and the display on the TV changed from the blue screen to the video of my Bluray player. As another test, I tested it out with my Chromecast dongle from another room. Just like the Bluray player, it output the Chromecast without any trouble.I am extremely pleased with this converter. After troubleshooting the video problem, it did exactly what I expected it to. The video quality is surprisingly good for this little box. I'm surprised it was able to downscale the video so well. Consider me pleased and I would recommend it to anyone in my same situation.

HDCP protection on recording my n64?
(short term review, haven't used it long) It works well, beautiful picture but... for whatever reason using this with Avermedia Recentral it creates or keeps a HDCP protection on recording. So on the direct hdmi pass through the picture looks perfect, but you won't be able to record it. I was doing this on an n64 to hdmi convert so I don't see how or why n64 would have HDCP protection but what do I know. Anyway you can bypass it with certain splitters, I just ordered one of these bad boys (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which is supposed to get around it.Update - ok recentral live gamer hd just straight up can't read composite to hdmi up converts so I can't really use this for what I want. The splitter did remove the HDCP protection though so I think that might still be an issue with this products upconvert. Not sure if I should even rate this. Picture was beautiful, but can't use it for what I want.

Works Exactly as Advertised (but does not magically fix aspect ratio problems with Amazon Fire TV)
This nifty device lets you convert HDMI output from a fancy new device into composite output for your old TV. It does this perfectly; just make sure it is set on PAL or NTSC as appropriate, and plug it in if it isn't getting enough power from the HDMI alone. Note that this does not come with a USB charger, just the cable.I picked up this device to connect my new Amazon Fire TV (with its HDMI output) to my old terrible CRT TV (without one). This it did admirably, but unfortunately the output aspect ratio of Amazon Fire TV is not the same as my CRT's, so the resulting images are just a bit off (everyone's a bit taller than they should be, faces are just enough out of proportion to be weird). So if you're looking to make your Amazon Fire TV work with your CRT, this isn't going to solve your problems (but I assume nothing short of a new TV will, either).

It actually works!
With so many electronic devices experiencing one technical difficulty after another it's nice to come across something that actually works out of the box. This is one of those units. We have an old tube tv in our bedroom but want to hook up our HDMI computer to it so we can watch online content in bed. This does the trick. The only minor issues I have with it are the following.1. The lack of instruction for the toggle switch on the side. I wasn't sure which position it should be and the instructions made no mention of the switch. Thankfully you only have a choice of A vs. B and when it wasn't working properly in position A and moved the toggle switch over the position B and walla, picture and sound just as I wanted.2. I don't think it's the fault of the device but some of the far edges of the picture are cut off when displayed on my tube TV. This could be a setting with my computer for all I know. Regardless it's minimal and nothing I am worried about. To make things simpler I purchased a wireless keyboard so I could surf the net from bed. Very happy with this purchase that's able to merge today's tech with yesterday's.

This item works fine. But it is unclear in regards to its power requirements. It comes with a USB cable to power it but no power plug to connect it to. The literature I was able to find said it only required power if it is connected to a low output device like a smart phone. The HDMI input cable was coming from a fully powered device but it didn't work. So I tried plugging it in. It worked but the output to the TV was only black and white. There is a setting on this unit for PAL or NTSC. I use the U.S. system (NTSC) and that was what it was set to. So I figured it couldn't hurt so I tried the PAL setting and the color then came through. So the product DOES need to be plugged in and try both PAL and NTSC to make sure you get the best output.
