Must-Read, Easily One of the Best Mangas I’ve Ever Read
I’m not much of a reviewer, but I felt I had to say something about this manga after finishing this volume. It feels like this volume could have been the final one, there are plenty of stories that end abruptly, leaving you with tons of questions that you have to answer yourself and in effect, keeping the story and characters alive with you forever as you sporadically come back and propose new ideas about the story to yourself. That feels very appropriate for this manga, however I am still excited to read the final volume coming out in a few weeks. The amount of heart-wrenching and beautiful moments in this story are spell-bounding. I’ve seriously never wept and felt the need to go hug my loved ones as a result of reading any sort of fiction, but Asano’s approach and direction with this story is phenomenal, making it almost impossible not to imagine your own loved ones and how you (MILD SPOILERS) might react at the end of the world. He spent so long just letting us get to know these characters in a calm and safe environment, only to completely reshape and test our perspective on them and their relationships in the last quarter of the run, in a way that really makes me take a second look at how I value the people I care about in my life. It’s so easy to forget about death and loss, that you might just let yourself take priceless things for granted. If even for just a few hours, this story has utterly reminded me of how grateful I am to be alive, and that is not something I can say about any other story, at least not to the extent Inio Asano has accomplished it.
