Looks at one of the forces that made early America from just outside our normal view,
Comes at the subject from outside the standard 13 colony viewpoint but looks at it from the standpoint of French Canada - the bogey-man of the English colonies. His seven volume set covers many things that we might know but then throws in other things (like the Jesuit - Five Nation standoff). Great set of books.

In Francis Parkman's epic saga volume 2, continues with the long journey of survival in the diverse cultural of differences as the frontier of what is today know as Canada and the early development of the United States with France, England, and Native Indians on North America. That moves further south through and beyond the Louisiana Purchase, and the continued quest for control on North America.Thank you for the on time delivery Amazon

Little known American History or simply neglected today .
I have sought to expand my understanding of American history . No better author than Parkman for the early centuries . He spent years among many of the tribes he writes about , extensively read the writings of the earliest French explorers and settlers involved . Parkman's still stands as the most in depth and at the same time , most exciting histories of the North American peoples. He obviously respects the Native Americans but does not gloss over their character nor sets them on a pedestal . These histories of his are not P.C. inspired , but seeks to tell the truth and realities of mans interaction and often clashes , with men of totally different cultures. All his histories are about these early Americans are so exciting you can smell the smoke of campfires and hear the great speeches of Native American speakers and the foresight of the men , the French and English and American settlers who led in these early years . A truly eye opening book .

Indians in his head
This seems somewhat biased to me but there are many details and references to help for further study. I would still highly recommend his two volumes if you are interested in the early history of New France.

A product of its times, to be sure, but an excellent read.
A most comprehensive and insightful history. Reflects the bias of his times, to be sure, but enough primary sources are used (and included as appendices) that one can draw one's own conclusions apart from the author's.
