A Real Gaunts Ghost Treat
Thank you Dan Abnett for what I believe to be another fine addition to the Gaunt's Ghost series of books. The content inside is nothing short of brilliance and is what myself and others will have come to expect from him, and he doesn't disappoint. The story keeps you turning page after page, reading on and on, you get drawn in, following the actions of Gaunt, Corbec and all the other Ghosts. The basic back-story to this book follows on from the previous book, Necropolis, another brilliant, 'thumb fest' page after page book as well. Although not really a problem, I do recommend reading Necropolis to identify some history to all the new breed of folk which are now featured in Honour Guard. The story itself in more detail is a great piece of work. From the first few chapters of the taking of Hagia, you know your in for a treat all round. Honour Guard begins with the Ghosts being sent to take on a group of Chaos Cultists known at the start as the Infardi, who have taken liberty of taking over one of the greatest worlds vital in the Sabbat Worlds crusade, a shrineworld to the Saint Beati Sabbat who first led Mankind to this area and brought it under the Imperium rule. When this planet falls to Chaos, Gaunt and the rest of the Ghosts are sent in to take it back, with more so of a path of respect more than glory. With Hagia's city captured, fate it seems plays a horrible hand and lands Gaunt in front of the High Militant Lugo, with Gaunt being blamed for a disaster that occurs and told that this is his last mission, of which he is to lead an Honour Guard to recovered some artefacts and the Saint herself from high in the Sabbat Mountains. The journey up an arduous road of twists, turns, and dirty tactics we have all come to know by the Dark Gods of Chaos follows the Ghosts wherever they go. Let's just say things along the way take many paths and see gut instinct and faith proving an invaluable weapon against overwhelming odds. I don't want to go into too much of a detailed review as such as I don't want to let on too many of the great moments, both of descriptive battle text that leaves you wondering how close the shots come, leaving you finding yourself hiding for cover from Infardi gunfire, hiding in the jungle wilderness to the fact that even YOU aint going to make it out alive! Where you realise this could be the last stand of the Ghosts, you just don't stop, you keep wondering just what is going to happen to Gaunt and his fellow Imperial Guard and Dan Abnett keeps you wondering with every line till its fantasy spelled ending, all be it quite short but suits the book quite well as the ending wouldn't take long to actually occur and so doesn't feel too out of place. Throughout the entire book you feel closer to each character and follow their journeys whole heartedly, and when upon reaching the end, you feel very satisfied and wanting the next book (which I have ordered).Hope you enjoy the read and to quote Gaunt with a slight alteration, "Men of Earth, Do you want to read forever?" well, concerning Gaunt's Ghosts by Dan Abnett, I sure do.Thanks a lot

An Excellent Read
A good book. Great action scenes, good plot, engaging characters and a desperate fight for The Ghosts again. What's not to like?

Very well narrated
From one of my favourite authors and very well read by Toby Longworth. Toby is becoming one of my favourite narrators, as he seems to take time in creating the correct atmosphere with the voices of the characters.

The long road to frozen death....
Honour Guard describes the journey of the Ghosts to the mountainous Shrineworld, the resting place of Saint Sabbat. Their opposition are luridly tattooed chaos hordes who keep charging the Ghosts at various points in the journey in ever increasing numbers. The book features some terrific fight sequences, especially those involving the 8th Pardus Imperial Guard armoured regiment when encountering the chaos cultists' armoured forces, the last of which takes place in a snow-blizzard at the Shrineworld itself. But the book is not all about huge battles and tread-heads. The way in which the Ghosts start to blend with the Vervunhive recruits is really well handled. There are some interesting images and dreams which the Ghosts experience on the way to the shrine. I particularly liked the description of the Shrineworld Hagia itself, with it's old monastic order and gloomy, atmospheric sepulchre in which the mortal remains of Saint Sabbat have been laid to rest. All in all, a really enjoyable read, and a great introduction to what follows later in the series.

Gaunt's Ghost's series conitinues to deliver the goods!
In contrast to the two preceeding books, Honour Guard jumps right into the fray at the get-go. Even though I am only four books into the series I am impressed with how each book is built around its own concept. Many series at this point have began recycling things to a degree but not so here. In this story we'll see that the impressive Ibram Gaunt is not without a few charactor flaws of his own as he continues to fight the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. This time the Ghost's will travel with members of the Pardus tank regiment and a few locals to the shrine of Saint Sabbat. The road trip style story is cool and the addition of the tank fighting brought in an interesting element. Rack up another one for Mr. Abnett, this is a great Imperial Guard novel!
