Elco Lighting RP-1B Insulation Sensor

This insulation sensor fixed the 30+ year old Lightolier recessed light above my fireplace. For years we never used the light as it would turn on/off even after replacing it with a low wattage LED.Easy fix besides pulling the light down and working through a 6” hole. Pop the old one out of the electrical box, pop the new one in and splice some wires.Recommend this replacement part to anyone wanting to save there old recessed light and to maintain the safety sensor as it was originally intended.

Your drop ceiling light flicking on and off or won’t come on even though the circuit breaker is not tripped? This sensor is the culprit. They are standard in certain types of fixtures to detect overheat and cut off the light before causing a fire. They can get cranky or fail open as they age. The good news is they can be replaced without the need to get a whole new fixture. Make sure you verify what you have before ordering. To verify your problem is the sensor, temporarily bypass it and confirm the light comes on.

Installing was easy. The fixture itself was difficult to open and close! I was pleased to be able to extend the life of the existing recessed housing rather than replace.

The original unit in my ceiling fixture used a threaded nut, like a strain release, to attach the unit to the junction box. It was very difficult to remove given that you have to work through the relatively small hole in the ceiling. This replacement uses a spring clip to snap into the junction box hole. Very easy to install. It will also be easier to remove, although I hope this will never fail on me. (The original was over 35 years old.)

It was easy to replace the old part with this. (mine was about 35 years old). It has been working since I installed it a month ago.
