Like a Script for the Movie
I'd say this novel could, in theory stand on its own, but let's be honest, it was written assuming that 99.9% of the customers who buy it have seen the movie, or have kids that did. As an aside the whole family LOVED the movie, saw it twice in the theater and have loved it just as much now that it's out on Blu-Ray. SEMI-SPOILER: The end of the novel is not like the end of the movie. The results in the Lego world are the same, but the "big surprise" of the basement scene is not in the book. Not sure why, but to me that was what made a really good movie completely great. This alternate "book ending" also really annoyed my son, who has been the primary reader of this book, but it didn't spoil the rest for him.To be honest I haven't read it all yet, but this review is based on what my son has reported to me. I've only looked it over and read maybe 15%, but my 8 year old son read the whole novel and really liked it. He finished off in I think about 4-5 days (though he reads above grade, so it'll depend on the age of the child reading it).Of course plenty of parents will probably read it to their kids at bed-time and I'm sure it would flow very well spoken out loud. Assuming that parent has seen the movie too (which they should because it's excellent!), it the dialogue is pretty much verbatim from the film, so it's almost like reading a script. This would be a weak point as far as it being a stand-alone novel in that the descriptions on occasion seem kind of thin. But this is not in all cases, because in other scenes the action and environments are actually pretty well fleshed out. In the end, the movie version has SO many things going on and so many delightful visual treats, a novel can't help but be a lot "less" than what you saw on screen.I'd personally have liked to have the images sprinkled throughout the novel than at the end to better set the scenes/tone, but my son didn't seem to mind that they came in after the end in a kind of "best moments" section.

Giving Lego
I feel ill-prepared to write a review on this nice little chapter book, as my grandchildren call them. I read but a bit of it myself, and then gave it as a gift to a grandson. We did see the movie and loved it, and I read enough that I felt it would partner with seeing the movie very well. The grandson was delighted - so much so that I bought another copy to give a granddaughter who has a birthday coming up. Children love it when you give them something familiar and new and different at the same time. The most excellent movie can be a bit overwhelming for those under age eight, but having this book would certainly enhance their understanding

Great starter novel for young readers
Purchased for my 7 year old son who loves LEGO and keeps up with all the movies and games related to it. Starting to get him to read books without so many pictures, and this was a good balance. Seemed to follow the story line of the movie. He really enjoyed this book.

It's fine; kid likes it for the most part
My kid wished it had more pictures and that they were placed in the appropriate places in the story rather than all together in the middle of the book. Also, the "screenshots" of the movie turned out kind of too dark. Writing was mostly good - however I really wish they hadn't placed so much emphasis on Wyldstyle's looks when Emmett first meets her.

Lots of stickers
This is the second book I bought because my son loved the stickers so much. The stickers come in all sizes and we added some to his birthday invitations for extra fun. Great for reading material too

Proud Mom
My son is 8 years old and loves Legos. All I hear about is the new Lego Movie coming to theaters on February 7th. So I thought I would buy him this junior novel while we wait for the movie to open. The book is 139 pages, with approximately 6 photo pages. My son carried this book with him to school, sports practice, and restaurants. He finished the book in less than 2 days. He absolutely loved it and I was so happy to receive it.

Purchased for 7 year old boy
My son has read this book a few times now and loves it. When we climb into the car to travel somewhere, he always brings it along to read. It follows the movie story line very well. My son actually read the book first before we saw the movie. Afterward he commented "The movie was just like the book!" Not challenging and not an incredible piece of literature, but adventurous enough to keep a child reading until finished.

Bricktastic
We read this in four sittings as it was so good. My 4 and 7 year old loved it and are already singing the song! My 9 year old didn't want to listen as she wants the movie to be a surprise. If you have a sensitive child who is going to see the movie they might like to know a rough outline of the story first. The language is great- Legoifying (is that even a word!!) lots of terms I can see slipping into our family vocabulary. We really liked Lego Clutch Powers but that is old now so it is great to be bought up to date.We loved that Batman and Green Ninja were in the story. In one way the kind of game I can imagine my children playing with their own lego but very well told. Simplicity is a hard thing to pull off sometimes.
