Hello - No there is no grill - just a wire rack to put wood on for burning.

can this item be safely stood on a wooden deck ?

I reckon so yes, it has a flat base and theres a gap underneath the main ash pan for supposed wood storage, so the main heat is elevated away from the base and wont harm the floor. Only thing to watch out for is ash or burning fuel falling out onto the deck
