Why would you need 12 of them? Do they wear out very quickly?

I use them under ceramic plant saucers to protect the wood window sill or scratchable surfaces. I have one in my bunny room to open gallon water jugs. I have three in my kitchen drawer and usingv3 together works better than one. Believe me when you have 12 you won't know where they've all gone! Also keep one in a travel bag and one in your purse to open water bottles!

Will they open a jar of pickles with a metal lid? The ones in the photo are plastic

Yes. I have not found any jar that I can fit in my hands that these tough jar opening mats can't handle. I have arthritis and they work well for me, worth buying.

Why buy these when a silicone pot holder or matt works perfectly?

If that's your opinion, why did you waste your time looking at them? These work far better than my silicone pot holders for me. If you have something that "works perfectly" then don't buy them.
