Catches Flys
This thing does indeed work as advertised. Has a bit of a yeasty smell but as long as you move it at least 10 feet away from the area you are trying to protect you cannot smell it. They sell refills of the baking soda/yeast attractant, but this thing is so filled with flies and so gross I'll just by another new one. Still working strong after 1 month. Also, have not seen any beneficial insects get trapped, just flies and lots of them.

Worked so good it was bad...
I was so sure this was going to be the answer to my problems, but it backfired on me.I have two large dogs in a pretty small privacy fenced yard. I have someone who comes out twice a week to pick up their poo & dispose of it in a small enclosed outdoor trash can that I then put out for the trash truck ever two weeks. I was noticing an increase in flies as the weather started warming up, so started searching for a good solution. I have tried multiple types of fly traps. This one was easy to setup with the exception that the upper portion of the lid wouldn't stay up on its own, so I propped it open with a piece of cardboard.I placed it fairly close to the patio door because I wanted to mainly stop flies from entering the house when the patio door was opened. About 2 hours after setting it up, I was excited because I could see that it was starting to attract some flies (it is quite stinky, by the way). 24 hours later is was clearly doing its job based on the number of flies that had found their way into the container. After 48 hours I decided i needed to relocate the container to a position farther away from the door because it was attracting more flies than it was catching. After a week in the new location, the container was about half-way filled with flies, but there were literally hundreds of flies still on the outside of the container. By this time it was obvious that they were breeding! There were so many flies & now the container was pretty much filled with flies, so I took it down to get ready to dispose of it. Remember when I said I had propped the upper lid open with a piece of cardboard? Don't do this unless you know for sure that you can easily remove it or you will not be able to seal the container to dispose! When I pulled it down from the hanger i had it on, the space between the upper & lower part of the lid was packed full of live flies! It was like a scene out of The Exorcist! The lid was covered with fly droppings & was so gross, i couldn't get the cardboard out & had to set the container in a small trash bag while it was still open & then place that in my large trash receptacle the night before trash pickup. After that barrel sat in the hot sun all morning waiting for pickup, my trash barrel smells like it had a decaying corpse in it for a month. I don't know if I will EVER get that smell out & since my HOA requires that I store my barrels in my garage, this is a real issue.I wish I had gotten some pictures, but i was way too nauseated by the experience to think about that.Moral of this story...it works really well for capturing flies, but turns into a breeding space & before you know it, you have created a much larger problem. Within a day or two of taking it down & disposing of it, I have seen only a few flies out there.

Worked well at first but the smell is putrid
I had this bucket out in a different area for 2 days. It got about 50 flies and I was impressed. We feed some alley cats and their food attracts an insane amount of flies. This morning I moved it closer to where the majority of the flies were swarming. Less than 8 hours later I went to check on it and found this monstrosity!! This product is no joke. There’s at least 2000 flies that were caught today. I’m so glad it works but also disgusted to see how many got trapped in only 8 hours. I will absolutely be buying again!!UPDATE: less than a week later and I had to toss it. This thing traps lots of flies but smelled like a porta potty that had not been cleaned in 3 weeks and left to bake in the hot sun- gagging when i tried to walk past it. The worst part was the larvae that began growing in the bucket. Hundreds of them writhing around. This bucket definitely traps them, but it does not kill them. Not one of them sank into the liquid or “drowned” as the product says it does. Not sure why they were just floating. If you have a minimal-medium fly problem this could work for you, but if you have a big fly problem this is not going to do the trick.

Works as directed!
I ate breakfast on the deck this morning and was not bothered by flies. I’d say it works . We suffer from black flys something fierce. Nothing I have tried has ever eliminated them. This is a good solution so far.I followed the directions for the yeast and hung it up on the outside part of my fence. (About 10-12 feet away from where we sit on the inside of the fence, but within 6 feet to the trash cans in the outside of the fence where the flies like to nest and breed.Today is the second day it has been in use and as you can see from the picture it has attracted and captured many flies. Now the mixture is just yeast, so it should be warm enough outside for the yeast to bloom and do its thing to attract the flies. I imagine it is going to get nasty as it fills up. I expect there will also me some maggot larva eventually. My husband will have to deal with the emptying and cleaning of that grossness. I imagine when it’s time to empty and refill with fresh one could just use regular yeast rather than buy the refills. But I haven’t tried that yet .I did not notice any bad odors as others have mentioned. But I am a professional baker and used to the smell of yeast so maybe that’s why?
