Hilman is always so refreshing to read with his background as Jungian
James Hillman has always had a way of opening up ariund the psychology of Jung.I find him an accurate analyst the psychology needed to deal with our society today, though written so many years ago.

So needed today.
I recall reading these essays decades ago. Now, they are ever more relevant. Hillman explains why, in the words of Mary Oliver we should let the soft animal of our body love what it loves.

a brief meditation on these essays by james hillman
These are two of my favorite essays by Hillman: an uplift to my heart, and to my biofeedback therapy techniques, when i work with people who have been injured in the many way people can be injured in and by life. They are also a challenge to traditional forms of doing therapy, in the many ways therapy can be done, and, for me at any rate, a constructive post-modern-ish challenge to be more creative and compassionate in each session, in the home- / daily-life- practice " homework " each person receives with each session, ( to include more of the bigger and deeper pictures from each persons' life-story ) and, above all, in my personal life interactions. Finding a copy of The Soul Of The World has not been easy, so having both essays in one volume is wonderful. Having read these two essays, i went back to my copy of Archetypal Process, which contains later work by Hillman, in a complex dialog with other psychologist-philosophers, in which Hillman goes farther with the ideas in these two essays. One of my colleagues borrowed my copy of this book, and upon returning it ( and ordering her own copy ) said that it is really an essential text for anyone doing people-work. i agree with that assessment.

I am familiar with the writings of James Hillman. However, his writings are difficult to understand, unless you have a background in depth psychology, and the Greek mythology. I have a MA in counseling, so The Thought of the heart, and The Soul of The World, was if interest.Carol Montpetit
