A book for the initated
I chose this book because of the positive reviews on Amazon and because I was beginning a course on Classical art and architecture.I think previous reviewers must have known the subject well already or be complete geniuses. It is one of the most user unfriendly books I've come across. The type face is difficult, and in places tiny. The plans and diagrams are unannotated and some, such as the full scale plans of the Minoan palace complex, on such a small scale as to be useless. The glossary omits many of the technical terms used in the text. I had to construct my own as I went along. The writer makes many name checks of similar buildings to those under discussion, but these were only helpful when they were among the few I've visited. They meant that the main thread of his argument was lost in a plethora of examples. This edition was written in the 1940s which may explain the presentation problems listed above. It also means that much modern archaeological discovery and interpretation is not included.I think that this book, which is authoritative and scholarly, functions as a reference for those who have a good understanding and knowledge of the subject already, and want to delve deeper into very specialised areas, I would also help if you had it as an ebook, could change and enlarge the typeface, and if you had a good encyclopedia of architecture.
