Great Printer with Anti-Consumer Technology Built Right In
Dymo decided to add unnecessary product lock outs to their LabelWriter 550. They have added an RFID tag to authenticate that you are using only official DYMO labels. For quality. Or something. You know, because you're very concerned about the museum quality of label you are printing. The RFID tag also counts how many labels you have left because looking in the printer is just too hard in the first world hellscape we live in. Instead of offering that as just a feature, they've decided it should be used to make sure you don't use any of those third party labels you have on hand. No, you need to only by DYMO labels.I'll be returning this printer and stick with the 450 for now.

YOU CAN NOT USE NON DYMO LABELS ANYMORE
I will return this, the cost of DYMO labels are so HIGH, You can buy none Dymo color poly and other company Dymo labels for a quarter of the DYMO labels, there are better solution printers that print any label so this will not be a choice as this will increase our printing cost by 75% and less choice as Dymo have very limited selection of labels. The Rollo printer prints every type style size of label. many more companies like this. BAD MOVE DYMO....... KEEP YOUR OLD DYMO PRINTERS AND SHOP AROUND FOR GREAT LABELS

New RFID chip that DYMO designed forces you to buy their labels. Not joking.
They added an RFID chip on their cardboard rolls to make you buy their labels. The printer will not print without this. Dymo 5XL 550 and 550 Turbo are all designed like this. Should rename it the Dymo "5X more expensive labels"The product listing used to say (it is now deleted):"For best performance, use DYMO LabelWriter Labels in a variety of sizes"It should say:"For ONLY performance, use DYMO LabelWriter Labels in a variety of sizes because we locked you out of using 3rd party labels."I was expecting to at least be able to use 3rd party labels but they lock the printer to where you cant even print without their RFID chipped label core.I was excited that the price was cheaper than their 4XL, had a power button, and had networking capabilities. None of that matters when you chip a label roll and force the consumer to buy supplies from you. Time will tell when nobody wants to buy this or Dymo sees an increase in customer returns after discovering how it was designed. I would recommend not buying any of their new generation labelmakers until this is updated with a software/firmware update that allows you to use the printer with 3rd party labels or until China copies the chips on the rolls offering a more affordable label alternative. Sadly a waste of an updated product as of now.

Don’t waste your time
Wait before you buy this. It does not print on “dymo” labels unless you buy the labels directly from dymo. We previously bought cases of many different colored labels that are specifically for “dymo” printers - they work perfect on the 450, but are completely useless on the 550. Until the company figures out this issue, we’re back to using our last 450 that still works.

Excellent printer
Very easy to use software. I bought this to replace an old zebra printer for my Amazon FBA shipments and I couldn’t be happier. You have to use Dymo brand labels and there are a bit more expensive than generic but it’s not a significant difference.
