Q: Can this be used to hold wood chunks as well for smoking?

Most will first add charcoal and then place a few wood chunks on the hot coal to add extra smoke.

Q: what is thickness of the material used?

I am unable to actually measure the thickness but I'd say it is 1.2mm - 1.5mm thick. An excellent product - I won't be buying anything else again

Q: Will this fit the Char Grill Akorn?

I am not familiar with the Char Grill Akorn. I use mine in a Weber kettle. If your grill is similar to this it will probably work.
