Best book for beginners

Bought few learn kanji books before but this one is the best fit. Not only provides helpful vocabulary with given kanji but also exercises and really good mnemonics/root explanation. All one needs for N5 and probably N4 too and it is not overwhelming like some others.

Good for practice

Great material to practice the first or most used kanjis. if you started learning japanese, you can use this book. wont regret it. try after learning hiragana and katakana.

VERY USEFUL

There are many kanji books, but this one is nicely done and very affordable: excellent value for the money. The 430 kanji signs are arranged thematically with many exercises and reading texts. Very useful material is on the CD-Rom, also available for download: flash cards, audio, reading passages. Highly recommended.I would consider this book as a very valuable companion volume to the must-have reference book "Japanese Kanji & Kana" by Hadamitzky and Spahn ( https://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Kanji-Kana-Complete-Writing-ebook/dp/B00BOE169U/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=hadamitzky&qid=1568919194&sr=8-1 ).

Kanji or not Kanji, that is the question…

Started with E Sato’s Learning Kanji published by Tuttle. Certainly gets you started though without context. Switched to Stout/Hakone’s book JKFB which preps you for JLPT 4/5. Also gives you more examples where kanji are combined with hira/katakana- not furigana but free standing words. From the first lesson, JKFB has you deciphering an Izakaya (bar) food menu and yen prices. For most, learning hiragana is straightforward, though katakana and kanji have some overlapping/similar characters which can take longer to master. Keep at it, learn a few kanji per day, review, repeat, listen to Japanese songs, read anime, dual language stories, and watch movies- you’ll be on your way. I’ll probably go back to E Sato’s book for review once I’m done with JKFB. In Honolulu we have lots of Japanese nationals living here, culture/language in supermarkets, restaurants. Japanese language pronunciation is heard frequently and there’s lots of made in Japan (MIJ) food labels to practice reading.Even in Honolulu, speaking “fluent” Japanese will always be a challenge unless you either have relatives, friends, or an Obaasan or Ojisan (elders) to practice with.

My favorite book

This has been my favorite book to practice kanji! I really enjoy the activities at the end of each section to help reinforce compound kanji and reading comprehension practices. Wish there was one for N3+!!

Can I learn Japanese on my own?

These books come recommended by several ESL Teachers who traveled to Japan to teach English. Each of them found this book and the accompany or partner book along with the workbook to be helpful in learning the language. I'm nervous about trying to learn on my own; yet, glancing at the first few pages makes me more hopeful I'll be able to manage as I get farther into it.

Very helpful

This is the second book in the series we have purchased and we are very happy with both. They are great for learning Japanese characters and and their meanings as well as syntax.
