2 year review of this vise(almost 2 years)
If this vise is used as intended and by that I mean medium to light duty stuff. For any where close to this price it is, in my opinion the best vise on the market. I literally use it every day. I have it mounted to the top of a large rolling tool cart(that I leave in one spot-indoors). I primarily use it for working on axes and holding stones when sharpening larger knives, machete's etc… and have used it for about a thousand other things in between. I like the vise enough that after about two years of use I was concerned they would change it or stop selling it as that is my luck so, I ordered a second one just now. I took a rubber pliable interior door mat and cut a square out of it to cover the swivel base, I then put a slit in the mat on one side with a small hole in the center(for the neck of the vise)then used painters tape on the bottom side of the mat to keep the gap sealed up. I did this to keep wood shavings and metal shavings out of the lubricated rotating part of the vise. Believe me you will want to do this if you are going to be creating any kind of shavings. I would suggest covering the base period. The only other thing I would say is keep the threads clean. They have pretty tight tolerances so shavings of any sort will cause you problems(that I do not have with the little mat cover mentioned above and just keeping the vise clean generally) . About once a month I wipe the threads off and put just a tiny bit of spray silicone lube on the threads and guid bars. Keep it cleaned and oiled and I don’t see why one couldn’t get 10-20 years out of it. Mine still works as well as the day I purchased it. Hope this helps!Health & Wealth!

Avid Gunsmiths
Took the jump and upgrade to this vise. It has some great options that you can't find in other brands. The price could be better, but the functionality makes it worth the purchase.

Defective Out of the Box, Update: Replacement
The media could not be loaded. After a lot of research and weighing options, I ordered this as I needed a vise for a project. Reviews online are pretty sparse with a common theme being this is lifestyle product from a hipster brand, and one should buy a “real” vise instead. Interspersed among the drive by opinions here and there are actual owner reviews, which are usually positive as long as one keeps the perspective that this is a light to medium-duty vise.Right out of the box I noticed the vise jaws did not open easily. I really had to crank on the handle to get any movement, and even then it was extremely jerky and rough. Inspecting the jaw threading I noticed a significant number of burrs and metal shavings. The threading for the vise jaw is either machined poorly, someone forgot to deburr the parts, or a combination of the two. I tried removing and re-attaching the threaded jaw vise assembly but unfortunately could not overcome the faulty tolerances.Very disappointing, especially as my project’s timeline is now delayed. I’ve requested a replacement and hopefully this sample was an anomaly and not representative of Real Avid’s quality. TBD.Update: Received the replacement the very next day so the delay impact was acceptable. The new vise functions exactly as one would expect. The jaws open and close smoothly (and after adding some Boeshield T-9, very smoothly) and likewise the ball joint. Increased rating to 4 stars as it looks to be a quality vise.
