3" HD Steel Wood Lathe Face Plate, 3/4" X 16TPI Threaded

My review is for the 3" diameter faceplate. My intended use is for a Sherline metal lathe. As such, I need a faceplate that runs true and is machined with close tolerances. This product exceeded my expectations. The threads are properly formed and fit the lathe spindle without being either too tight or too loose. The faceplate machining is smooth and the front plate was true within 0.003" as measured at the outer edge. To fit the Sherline spindle I had to machine about 0.25" from the back of the spigot. After that, I trued the faceplate to less than 0.0005". The steel machined as if it had a high carbon content. I do not know the hardness, but it could be machined with HSS tooling. I will need to add additional holes to match the fixture I plan to mount to the plate. Based on how the steel machined, I expect that it can be accomplished with high quality drill bits, lubrication, and low RPM.

The faceplate must screw completely down on the shaft, this one did not screw completely down on my lathe (which is not uncommon). If you run into this issue remember to install bronze washers on shaft so the faceplate is completely against the bottom of the shaft. I liked that this provided wrench slots for easier removal. Faceplates can often become stuck on the threaded shaft. Quality for the price is excellent. I recommend using this only to turn small bowls since it only provides holes for 4 wood screws. Fit and finish very good.

I am using this face plate to turn bowels. It is small enough to be able to blend the bottom but sturdy enough for roughing in the bowl.
