This did what I wanted it to do
I bought these to solder 1/4" al rods into holes drilled into 3/8 and 1/2 al cutoffs that I had drilled half-way into. On the first try I just put the rod into the hole heated everything up and applied the rod to the joint. Results were ok, not a great joint and had to heat the larger piece to get some penetration. Joint held fine after cleaning up excess on a lath and turning down larger dowel. Second try, I heated up the larger piece, melted enough solder in the hole to fill about 1/3 of the way, then inserted 1/4 piece and heated up until everything joined together. This method worked well and is the method that I am using now. Rods seem to go a long way so I am pleased with purchase, and will re-order when I run out of the pack.
