Buyer beware!
Did not lock in place right. Would sometimes lock and then release on its own so not safe at all. Sending it backUpdate: someone called me from the company and left a voicemail bribing me with $30 to delete my bad review! Reporting to amazon

Would give 5 stars but had to rig it to remove annoyinf sound and locking mechanism
Gate works wondefully, so much better than a wooden one that u have to move around or step over, which eventually marks up your walls. Shipping was a bit of a hassel, but I am not sure who's fault it was. Item arrived with a piece broken off of it, but it was an irrelevant plastic piece, super glue fixed it.My only complaint is that we did not use this for a child, but to keep our dogs out of certain areas of the house. Because of this, we have no need for the safety locking mechanism that is standard, and can't be turned off, or the very loud noise it makes when retracting, another feature on the gate for alarming you if the gate has been opened unwantingly. The safety locking feature actually forces you to turn the knob everytime you want to detract the gate, so you cannot simply open the gate halfway and walk through, then shut the gate behind you.I did figure out though, if you hold the knob in the turned position, it not only takes away the awful noise it makes, but it also allows you to retract and open the gate as much as you want without having to turn any knob. So I simply turned the knob to that position, and put a tiny screw into the side of it to hold it in place (see attached picture). Viola! All problems solved. I would have given this gate a 5 star if it would have had a feature to do this without having to "rig" it. The little broken piece and slow shipping were annoying, but I wouldn't dock stars for them, because the gate is truly exactly what I wanted, high quality, and works as I wanted it to (now that I jimmied it).

DANGER!!!!!!
What an absolute death trap. I was always a little uneasy with this gate and last night it failed sending my 9 month old down 14 steps. She must have had a guardian angel because she only has a little bruising. A trip to the emergency room, and a bruised baby is the best case scenario. Please don’t use these damn gates. They WILL FAIL and Maybe you baby won’t be as lucky.

Absolutely love this gate
Absolutely love this gate. We use it at the bottom of our stairs to keep our 1yr old from darting up them if we turn our head. Probably not for the top of stairs as there is a potential for slack in the gate. Perfectly out of the way when not in use, retracts like a roller shade. It is a little tough to use with one hand but just like anything after a few weeks we got the hang of it. Couldn't have asked for a better gate for the bottom of my stairs.

Very happy!
I bought this gate to use in our bedroom double door doorway to keep the dogs in our room at night so we can keep the doors open. I had to get a bit creative because i wanted it to open to the left when standing in the bedroom, but it does work. It's the perfect length and is well made. It is a 2 hand job to pull out and latch it. Once pulled out to it's full length, i have to hold the mesh with one hand and slip into the latch with the other. Not a huge deal. My only semi complaint is that if you don't depress the release button when you unhook the gate, it rolls back in pretty loudly. I do like that you get 2 sets of mounting brackets, so you can easily use the gate to another location as well. I was worried the cat would shred this, but she hasn't tried to climb it. She has tried to get under it and in doing so, released the gate from the bottom bracket,so it rolled back up (remember, iinstalled the brackets differently from directions). Her face with all that noise was priceless! Lol.

A little tedious but overall a good gate
I bought two of these for the purpose of animal containment. I have one set up to keep my dogs in the entry way if they are wet or muddy from bring outside and the other to keep all of the animals out of our upper level.I love the fact that this can be in a hallway and closes the hallway off when you need it. The rest of the time it is out of the way. I have both set up as close to the floor as possible so the cats can't crawl under them.I have a metal baby gate with a handle you lift to open the door to go through the gate. I had that upstairs and this Gaterol gate going downstairs where my husband and I have our bedroom. But the Gaterol gate really does take some practice to open and close. So if your arms are full, you can fairly easily open the gate (first twist the knob then unhook the gate--you do not need to hold the knob to open the gate as I first thought), but it is more difficult to close the gate because you have to hook both the top and bottom. If you don't hook both the top and bottom on the first try and the gate starts retracting, you have to start all over again. I ended up switching the gates so most of our traffic is through the metal baby gate and the Gaterol gate is a "sometimes we go through it" gate. But it is doing a great job of keeping the animals out.My biggest complaint is when I installed the first Gaterol gate using the guide that comes with it. First of all it was difficult to make out the position of the brackets. I had to do some guessing. I used the guide to position the brackets and after I screwed them to the wall I found out they weren't far enough apart and I had to redrill holes to get the gate to fit on the brackets.I had read other reviews about the plastic spacers people had bought to even out the gate vertically if they had wall trim to attach the bottom of the gate to. I just went to the hardware store and bought a discounted piece of trim to screw to the wall for the upper gate brackets. Then painted it to match the wall. That worked great.

Good gate for the price.
We got this gate for the top and bottom of our stairs. Our bottom stairs dont have a banister on both sides and the wall doesnt line up so we needed something that would fit without making it easy for baby to crawl under. Traditional gates didnt work. The instructions are horrible and we had to watch youtube to figure it out. The gate its self is nice. A little loud when retracting (safety feature) but I can live with that. Works great for our needs.

Not For Athletic Cats
Placed in a kitchen entrance to keep our troublesome cat from bothering us while we cook. Installed easily and opened fine but the cat was able to push the mesh from below to sneak under. Round One to cat.Modified it to weigh the mesh down so it could not be lifted but this stopped it from being able to retract. Round Two to us (sorta). With the cat unable to make it through, he returned 10 minutes later and leapt over it while using the mesh to assist his jump. Round Three to cat, product has no further use to us as it can not stop a persistent animal.Do not purchase if your cat has even the most basic athletic ability. Probably fine for old dogs, invalids, and babies.

A mediocre baby / cat gate.
We have 2 large cats and 1 small kitten. Got this gate to keep them out of the bedrooms as they chew on cables and clothes. It works great to keep the big ones out. The kitten still can get in if she’s very persistent but usually avoids it since it’s hard to do. Sits about an inch off floor, flexible material, but sturdy enough to not let anything through. Only drawback for us it having to unhook it each time we get up during the night as it very noisy to retract. Also have to twist and hold button with 1 hand while guiding the gate with the other hand or it snaps hard. Makes it difficult if you’re holding something and can’t use both hands. Ie. when my sister has her baby here she needs help in and out every time. Also had to drill several holes into the wall to anchor it in. Overall, a bit of a pain but gets the job done.

Secure, clean looking and packs away. Takes time to set up.
My toddler can't get around, under or through it, though he's tried but the gate has defeated him. It takes a little bit to install and some ingenuity to mock up little wood adapter pieces in order to get around baseboards, that's why I'm knocking it down a star. Not so easy to get it up and running so that's not the best especially if you need to get it set up asap for a suddenly mobile infant or toddler. I bought two, and each took me more than 2 hours to securely install. Also it takes a bit of getting used to the unlocking mechanism particularly for the grandparents. The pros though are that it is very secure and holds the weight of my toddler (14 month old) who has taken to leaning on it and trying to figure out how it unlatches. Also, it has a very clean look both when it is unfurled and when it is retracted. No clutter when not is use, so there's nothing for us to trip on, and when it is 'gated' it is light, see through and not ugly.
