Can i use this for camping only for a couple of night's one for me and for my wife without a license?

Well, the strict interp would be under Federal Law, which ONLY allows "un-licensed" use of radios using the frequencies of the UV-5R the answer is no, unless there is imminent and certain need to protect lives of the user or others. This radio requires a Ham radio General license which is only granted after paying a fee, and passing an exam.

For casual use i'd recomment looking for the UV-5G which uses the GMRS frequencies that only require a $35 dollar no-test license OR an FRS (Family Radio Service) low power unti that does not require ANY license at all.

Be aware that while radio power matters, terrain and antenna height matter as much and probably more. All this these radios are essentailly "line-of-sight".

At is the range on these radios? Short and long antennas?

Short, 3 blocks in normal operation. a mile with the counterfeit longer antenna. Up to 85 miles Mountain Top to Mountaintop WITH 2 great Hustler Magnetic antenna. Better with Yasue, ICOM, Kenwood. Remember quality NOT cheap ANTENNAS first!

I keep seeing programming cable needed but don't see the specs for said cable?

What is the distance you can communicate

These are FM radios so distance is dependant on elevation of each radio antenna and amount of obstacles in between the radios. If both radios were on top of a mountain and there was nothing but clear air between the two radios they will work several miles. If the radios are on the ground in normal circumstances you can probably count on a mile, maybe two at best.

If you are using a repeater of some sort that will can extend the distance.
