Almost a hundred years of identifying signs.
This is a highly specialized book covering mostly recognition symbols painted on British combat vehicles. To the military these markings are very important to reduce, hopefully completely prevent, the so called Friendly Fire incidents. It is bad enough for the enemy to be shooting at you, but if your anti tank gunners or ground attack aircraft shoot at you it is considered very bad form.To me, the most amazing fact about this book is that it exists at all and with so many photographs that cover a hundred years of history. Well, he says a hundred years, 1903-2003, but actually the first pictures and discussions start with painting identifying signals on the tanks used in World War I. On the other hand, he reports that Lord Nelson had the mast footings on his ships painted in an identifying pattern to make them easy to identify. In addition to these kind of recognition signals, other types of signage is also covered from unit identifications to some indication of service to be performed by that unit such as an ambulance or a vehicle used by general officers. Some signage was distinctly unofficial, such as the naming of individual machines, such as the name SAMSON on the turret of the tank in the picture on the front of the book.An amazing amount of detail.

Impressive finale for the series
This is the fourth and final volume of a series of unique reference works which will probably never be matched. On its own merits the book is very good indeed and wraps up a number of odds and ends, including the naming of tanks, stencils, flag signals and even fire extinguishers. It could be argued though that this volume also needs to be seen as part of a larger whole, with the thematic approach followed throughout the series necessitating a view of the series as a coherent and overarching project. The author is quite defensive of the decision to follow a thematic rather than chronological format, and it's clear that he has come in for some stick so I can't blame him, but actually I feel he made the right call and the four volumes make absolute sense in this format. Anyone with an interest in armour will get something from this volume (the photos are worth it alone, before we get to anything else) but if you're lucky enough to get hold of all four volumes (good luck getting hold of volume 2 for anything less than a King's ransom) then you'll have a reference work which is second to none. Overall one gets the impression of a labour of love and the sense of enthusiasm for the subject shines through in every volume. Very highly recommended.
