Q: is this a newer version?

Honestly I don't know. I bought it about 3 years ago...if that helps you! I certainly didn't get all the extras here.

Q: are the stiches tight?

Yes they are. But it all depends on you and you skills. While this machine is small/portable, it can perform well above its size.

Q: I do not understand how this creates an actual seam. I have threaded the device according to the instructions but an actual stitch is never created.

I have had great difficulty with this product. I used it once - then it stopped stitching (even though it was still running). In reading other remarks, I found that it continually happens. I attempted to reconnect the the thread inside the mechanism, but was never able to put it back together. The other remarks indicated this continues to happen. It is an inferior product.
