Field & Stream Outdoor Survival Guide: Survival Skills You Need (Field & Stream Skills Guide)

I read this book or section of the larger book, with open eyes. I have several survival manuals and have had some survival training and teach wilderness survival to Boy Scouts.The information presented is designed in my opinion to help someone who has never read a survival book or been in a situation needing to think own their own feet.While it is not the most comprehensive book on the subject, it would give you a chance. The size is right to pack in a day-bag or backpack or a small shoulder bag to have for reference.The time you need survival information is not the time to start reading a book.Buy it, read it , study it and hope you never have to use it.

Lots of usable info in this easy to read and entertaining book. Nice illustrations, easy to follow with the exception of at least one knot tying illustration that is incorrect (try them out at home before you need them in the outdoors!) This book is reprinted stuff that the author published in past Field and Stream issues gathered into a nice package that any outdoor enthusiast would appreciate and it is tough enough to be packed and used in the field! I have not tried all the suggested recipes in the book, but most of those tried are very tasty! This book would be a nice present for any novice or grizzled veteran of the outdoors!

Tips and technniques on how to survive. I think that most of these tips are fairly common sense, unless you are from a highly populated area and have never ventured out past the city limits. Anyone who an experienced hunter, fisherman, or have ever watched a survival type show on television might want to know that much of this book will be old news. If however you are going to get this book, just go ahead and buy "The Complete Outdoorsman" by Field and Stream. That book contains this one as well as a fishing version and a hunting section. They too are pretty common sense but with all of them combined there should be enough new information for you to learn to make it worth your effort.

Not what I expected, but maybe useful, maybe not.

I came across this book at a small book sale at work, and had to have it! The guide is filled will survival knowledge that is easily understandable, and well illustrated. This is book is simply hard to put down.Most of the survival tips are illustrated, but a few of them are not--or the illustrations don't fully demonstrate the lesson. That being said, this book is still one the most enjoyable and useful guides I've come across.

I chose this book because my fiancee loves the survival stuff! He got this for a Christmas gift (after already having a few other's like it) and he's read it already! It's a great purchase and exactly what I expected! Good price too!

I believed this would be pretty much a outdoor survival guide, i.e., woodcraft, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it covered urban survival skills as well.I was impressed enough that I purchased a copy for a gift to my son-in-law.

This is a great basic survival guide. Great to throw in a pack and easy to understand for all ages.

This book gives you a lot of tips on several outdoor related disciplines such as shelter building, making fire and so on. Many of them are pretty good but to my dismay they are completely unorganized so that you can't just go to a chapter "making fire" or "building a shelter" when you need info quickly. Instead you have to read the whole list of tips (table of contents) and find what you're looking for by trial an error.Pros:- price is fine- some good, some excellent tips- fairly understandable even to newbies- good sketchesCons:- unorganized !- too incomplete as lone survival guide to take with you on a serious hike or for your BOB(read beforehand AND take along for reference with additional material)

The Ultimate Survival Guide by the same company is more inclusive and a better read. This one is cheaper though.
