Crazy Horse and Custer: Born Enemies

This is a not to be missed read for all Americans.
I was especially moved recently reading SD Nelson's book Crazy Horse and Custer: Born Enemies. As a long time resident of South Dakota and the proud niece and granddaughter of West Point graduates, this thought-provoking, well researched and interesting biography really intrigued me. One of the facets I most appreciated about the book, besides its gorgeous illustrations, was the way it provided a balanced and thoughtful look at the lives of both men which highlighted their strengths of character, as well as their very human flaws. The historical note at the end as well as the story's final image still resonate with me many months after reading it. I encourage anyone with an interest in history to pick it up.

Good book but not great
I learned some history from it.

Illustrations augment the action, emotion, and pathos of this wonderful book
I thoroughly enjoyed Crazy Horse and Custer Born Enemies. The author included many interesting details about both men without bias. His illustrations added immensely to my understanding of people living in that chaotic period of history. Maps and timelines were included for added comprehension. The author communicated and promoted inclusivity and compassion for both cultures by giving readers a true representation of the historical facts and adding his belief in the goodness of the world.

Excellent read
Purchased as a gift for our grandson who likes reading about history. I, too, really enjoyed reading this book before giving it to him. I try to read all books before giving them; not all books that I buy for our grandchildren pass my inspection with such high marks.

Kindred Spirits
A short, concise story that weaves together the threads of history and destiny of two individuals separated by a chasm of miles and culture until they are brought together on the tapestry of the battlefield face to face as two kindred spirits.

For juvenile readers
Almost returned the book after the first couple of chapters due to what seemed to be an overly judgmental portrayal of Custer, but it got a little better. Interesting that nowhere else have I been able to find a presentation of Crazy Horse as having a white father. I was expecting a serious history book, and found this is more an elementary or middle school age book. This was not at all clear in the advertising.

Epic History for Young Readers
This is a fascinating dual biography. Kirkus Review says it best: "Legendary warriors Crazy Horse and Custer are brought to life in this impeccably researched story". This is "historic nonfiction that reads like an adventure novel". Reading age: 10-14 years, Grade level: 5-9

Broadening Children's read
Very well organized; giving the upbringing and history of the two main characters. I read the first 50 pages before giving it as a Christmas gift
