I am going to clear up a small misconception here. I am a totally blind man myself, and I have purchased this product knowing the feature set and I can tell you it doesn't talk. This is a microwave that simply connects through a wi-fi connection and uses the MSmartHome app along with alexa to control the unit. The alexa device will do the talking. One has to follow the given instructions to connect the unit to the app and the wifi to get it to work. It doesn't have to talk to be used by us blind people unless you want one with a voice built in and there is only one or two I know of that have that feature.

does light come on when door is opened?

Yes and also when in use. Goes off when not in use.

Where are the vents on this model (i.e., how many inches from the front surface? Would like to build it but not compromise ventilation.

When you are facing the microwave, the vent is on the right side of the back of the microwave and on the left side of the microwave, one is the air inlet and the other is the air outlet. Actually, this is a Countertop Microwave Oven, we do not recommend you use this model for any built-in application as it was not designed for that type of installation. However that will be OK if you make a proper installation, a minimum clearance of 3.0 inches (7.5cm) is required between the oven and any adjacent walls. Also, one side must be completely unenclosed.
