Why Buy The iO Series 9 When You Can Just Get The iO Series 7?
I’m unimpressed by the Oral B iO Series 9. For more than double the price, it doesn’t offer anything of price-value over the more sensibly priced iO Series 7. The Series 9 is the flagship model, over the lesser Series models it offers ‘3D teeth tracking with AI’ technology that’s supposedly superior for helping to clean your teeth, extra brush modes and an admittedly useful charging case. Unfortunately, it seems Oral B’s marketing team have been given free rein to make arduous claims about the technology inside this toothbrush and how it’ll deliver a superior clean.3D teeth tracking with AI is a gimmick at best. Firstly, there is no ‘AI' involved here, it’s become a marketing buzzword. All 3D teeth tracking provides is an extra layer of graphics inside the Oral B smartphone app that approximates where you’re brushing on the 3 sides of your teeth. The Series 7 and 8 offer already have a brush tracking mode which shows where you’re brushing in four quadrants of your teeth. This would be fine, but there is significant delay in the tracking so it’s not in real-time, and it regularly tracks incorrectly and just approximates so it doesn’t feel accurate. This feature doesn’t really provide any real benefit over the standard tracking feature set included with the Series 7 and 8. I have a strong suspicion that this ‘3D tracking’ could be easily enabled in the app software and is just artificially limited. In terms of physical design there is no difference between the models, the toothbrush looks space age and feels beautiful to hold. The only difference is the inclusion of a colour screen on the Series 9 and 8 as opposed to the black and white screen on the Series 7. The colour screen is laughably dim and low resolution (yet in all the marketing images it looks sharp and colourful). You can see scan lines on animations when cycling between modes, there’s no brightness adjustment, and you can’t really see it whilst you’re brushing. The iO 7 black and white screen does the exact same job and displays the exact same information, you really don’t need to pay more for this tiny low resolution screen to be in colour. All of the smart features are based in & calculated inside the Oral B App, which granted it’s a very nicely designed app. The app tries to game-ify brushing by providing challenges and awarding medals for proper brushing. It also gives some helpful tips for brushing and lets you record and track other cleaning routines like tongue cleaning, mouth washing and flossing. This data integrates with Apple Health and syncs over so you can also view the data in there too. Unfortunately, the toothbrush without the App is basically just like using a standard electric toothbrush with a screen that shows how long you’ve brushed for. It does sync across brushes made without the App, but they provide very little to no extra insight apart from time spent - they are listed as ‘unguided’ so you get none of the insights or data. To get the most out of the smart features of this brush, you need the app opened on your phone the whole time you’re brushing. In terms of battery life, you loose about 4% per 2 minute brushing session, so you can expect the battery to last you a couple of weeks between charges which is great, but it’s no better than the Series 7, actually a little bit worse. In terms of charging, the Series 9 comes with the standard wireless charging puck which will charge the toothbrush in a few hours, but disappointingly it still comes with a two prong shaver plug instead of a traditional 3-pin plug. It is absolutely baffling that Oral-B still insists on using a two-prong plug, nobody uses these anymore and it means you are forced to use a bulky travel adaptor. It comes with a separate wire to use with the charging case, but again its a 2-prong plug and I’d say the case feels quite cheap so it really doesn’t matter too much. The cleaning performance is of course great with how much power the iO brushes have, but it’s no more powerful or better than the Series 7. You get the same pro timer and pressure sensor between the different Series. The only thing that’s different are the 7 brushing modes (over 5 on the Series 7), of which the two extra modes don’t add any extra benefit (tongue clean and super sensitive - I’m going to use a specialised brush for cleaning my tongue and one sensitive brush mode is enough, the super sensitive mode is so low powered you may as well not bother switching it on). Another thing to mention is I’d say is the brush head can sometimes feel a little harsh on the gums, it’s not the most gentle clean so you have to be mindful and not use too much pressure and let the brush head do the work.Overall, as an electric toothbrush is this certainly one of the best you can buy, but this version really doesn’t make sense considering you can get the exact same performance minus a few extra (useless) features for less than half the price with the Series 7. You don’t need the colour screen, 3D Teeth Tracking with AI is a gimmick, the extra brush modes are unnecessary, and the only thing you’ll miss is the ability to charge from the case. You’re not missing out on anything by opting for the more sensibly priced Series 7, which is why I am compelled to give this product a low rating despite its performance. It does not offer anything substantial over the Series 7 to justify the erroneous price, which is the model I’d highly recommend over of the Series 9.Thank you for reading my review, if you found it helpful let me know below!

Expensive but VERY good
I had to have most of my teeth capped ten years ago and therefore have a lot invested in my mouth. I also love a gadget, so the run-of-the-mill Oral B toothbrush was never going to be the right choice for me.I have only had this toothbrush a couple of weeks and am as thrilled about an oral hygiene product as I am ever going to be. I used to own a Philips Sonicare and when that passed across into the place where electronics-go-to-die-because-of-a-design-flaw-that-doesn't-manifest-for-a-couple-of-years I bought a cheap ($30) alternative that I mistakenly thought would do just as good a job.I still thought that when I got the Oral B iO9. Although the app on the phone is gimmicky, it does actually do a surprisingly good job of making sure you clean your teeth properly. The pressure warning is also a good feature, as it turns out I used not to apply enough pressure when cleaning my teeth. After a couple of weeks' use, there is a very clear and obvious difference in how my teeth look. They look clean. Added to which, with so many capped teeth in my mouth I have had gum problems for ages and whatever magic this brush delivers, either via the round rather than the slightly oblong head of the Philips Sonicare and its cheap knock-offs, the technology, the pressure sensitivity, or the modes, my gums are getting noticeably healthier and gingivitis is subsiding without me using any specific treatment for it other than this brush. It may be a little pricey for many, and the significantly cheaper Pro 2 2500 is probably the way to go for many people, but I have to say I am not regretting splashing the cash on this little beauty. I doubt I will stray away from Oral B from now on.

First time Oral-B user switching from Philips Sonicare
My review will not list the product details, and features listed in the product description, but will cover the more practical aspect of the product usage.I have used the Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean for many years and preferred it to Oral-B when I first tried both out. The feeling of the brushing strokes in my mouth preferred the technology used by Sonicare, which was softer on the teeth. However, every time the warranty runs out after two years, it gets broken. So after 3 expensive toothbrushes - I decided to make the leap and try out Oral-B.I was hesitant because my daughter has one and I really don’t like the way the brushes move on my teeth. However, I found out that the IO range uses technology that makes the brush strokes similar to the Sonicare with the advantage of Oral-B’s technology. The toothbrush is designed very well and the part the holds the head is definitely more robust than the Philips one (which is the part that keeps in getting broken). I really like the various features and functionality it offers. Downloading the app and connecting to it was really simple and easy. The feature I love is the pressure feature which lets you know whether you are pressing down too hard or not.I deducted one star because the toothpaste when brushing seems to trickle down to the main toothbrush (which didn’t happen with the Philips one) - perhaps it is because the brush head stem is thicker so it catches it. So even when I wipe it with a towel after I brush, it marks the charging unit and ends up with dried toothpaste all over it.The charging unit itself could be better designed. The toothbrush could be knocked off easily as it is held by magnetic force. I have put it towards the back of the shelf and so far the toothbrush has stayed upright (it is a pretty strong magnetic connection).I also deducted in star because of the charging travel case. As a regular traveller for business, it makes a difference when you can pack lightly and less bulky items and less is best. The charging case needs a proprietary plug/cable to go along with it instead of a universal connector like USB or USB-c. I am not sure why Oral-B did not use this.Overall, I am happy with the product and getting used to to it. I sometimes miss the Philips Sonicare but didn’t want to spend a vast amount of money knowing that I may need to replace it again after two years. Only time will tell whether this Oral-B will endure the usage and last beyond 2 years.

Meant for single users according to OralB!
I really like the toothbrush, it does a great job. BUT I went for the iO9 for its additional 3D tracking. The problem is the App is only meant for use by one user, in Oral B’s reply to my complaint, I quote..” like I said these toothbrushes are not meant to have multiple users” at £250 each!!! So my wife and I can use the brush and app but can’t use it’s full functionality. So not really any point shelling out for the 9. To elaborate, the App has guided programmes for gum care, whitening etc called journeys, I set up the gum care journey which then locked out some of the functions such as whitening , daily clean or intense clean so no one else could use them. So will keep the brush as it’s doing a good job but dissatisfied with what you get for the price tag.

Io 9 review
Excellent product big jump in cleaning from previous 9000 model which is nearing its end of life. Battery life not so good when using intensive cleaning but apart from that great all rounder but expensive initial outlay. Would recommend waiting for sale before buying.
