7 year old very taken with the story
I have been reading this with my 7-year-old son; taking it in turns to read a chapter to one another. We have both really enjoyed it and I am a little mystified by some of the negative reviews on here.Uncle Fearless, the disabled and thus demoted former king of a meerkat tribe, has been relegated to nursery duty and has been raising 3 kits in a burrow. He eventually brings them out to meet the rest of the tribe and continue their education in meerkat ways. He regales them all the time with his barely-credible stories of his adventures with the Blah-blahs (humans), before they embark on their own adventures together. The humour derives largely from the meerkats' interpretation of human speech and behaviour (eg Uncle Fearless thinks cameras are 'eye protectors' for humans to hide behind, and talks about how he 'tamed' the Blah-blah chief; it is clear that the human was approaching a wild animal with appropriate caution...).It is a little difficult for a child to read because of the meerkat slant, and their phraseology (Uncle says 'what what' a lot, for example), but reading it alternately, as we did, made for a very enjoyable shared storytime. We enjoyed it, found it funny, adopted some of the amusing meerkat expressions, and highly recommend it to 7-10 year olds.
