At first I had a horrible time with this because one side would close great
Painted this black and mounted with my black chain gate. At first I had a horrible time with this because one side would close great, but the other side would smack against it without the lever going up and over to allow the gate to auto-close. I tried using a metal file to smooth the edges all to no avail. Finally after watching and observing and thinking about it I realized the issue was where on the latch it was striking. The working side hit the latch much further up on the hinge compared to the non-working side. So I removed it and built up the mount until the gate struck it at the appropriate location on the latch. Now everything is working well.I also like the fact that it is designed so that the latch won't stay in an upright position, it will fall back down after it has been raised. I have a different part for my rear gate and that one sometimes likes to stay upright which is a pain.

Strong metal however lousy manufacturing and some design flaws--fixable with some tools.
Geeze, talk about poor manufacturing and quality. Another example of getting what you pay for. I had to do several modifications to make this work. The finish plating was globbed in certain places causing the 'wings' to catch and either not open well or not fall back in the 'latched' position. I had to file the globs down. Also the pivot pin is not positioned far enough from the back of the mounting plate to provide adequate clearance between the 'wings' and the back plate so the wings would get stuck near half travel in both directions. I had to use the dremel to bevel the back edge of the wings so they would not catch on the back plate. The angle of the edge of the wings works better if bent up a little. Had to grease everywhere metal moves on metal so the wings would reliably open and close properly. I knew I was probably getting something that would need tweaking so I didn't mind. I finally got it working pretty well. It's strong and should last for many years and the price was right. Non fix-it people would be disappointed with this.

Butterfly Fork Latch for auto-securing a pipe gate when being closed...
Exactly as expected. Nothing flashy here. Typical mass-production item and found to be sturdy enough to do the job it was intended to do. It provides auto-securing of the gate when being closed, rather than the latch needing to be worked by hand to secure the gate in the closed position. A simple mechanism that should last at least as long as any other device used for the same purpose.

sturdy latch; does the job
If you're going for aesthetics, buy something more expensive. Latch is visibly cheaply made, but is sturdily built, and will do the job it was made to do. In a shipment of 20+, only one was defective, although a few had to be worked several times to get them loose enough to function easily. The company traded us out the defective one with no hassles. Contact with seller is only through amazon by e-mail, and got to be a little inconvenient, but still workable. As for the latch, if you're on a budget or you don't need pretty, I'd recommend these without hesitation.

Latch Well that Looks Well
Strong enough metal, simple automatic closing mechanism. Just what I wanted for a gate latch.Well built and easy to install. Works well, though it would take a heavy gate and spring to latch without one having to raise the bar to close.I built a PVC gate to keep my cat in, and used 3/4" PVC pipe. My pipe meet at a 3/4" collar to engage the latch, as it really wants a 1-1/4" pipe, and the OD of a plastic PVC collar fit well.
