Non-functional out of box - will cost you big bucks just to make work
Bought this item via a local urban local farming program, so cannot verify it as an Amazon purchase. However, it is the same item. These are the reasons for my 2 star review: Cheaply made - the item is clearly made for outdoor use. However, the timer supplied with the kit states "for indoor use only".. I was advised to put it in a plastic bag for outside use. For $300, the proper timer could have been supplied. The water distribution system on top is comprised of one of those plastic heads that cost about 89 cents in a mini water gardening set. The water simply dribbles down the side of the tubing, irrigating only one portion of the container. I substituted a mini garden divider head, to evenly aerate the substrate. The item itself is cheaply made: the bottom is a plastic plant pot of the type you'd get at a big box store. It holds about 10 gallons of water. In less than 6 months use, never moved or jostled, mine now has a leak that will necessitate taking it apart, since the water drains out after 2 days. The final hardware component is the group of five styrofoam containers. So far, no complaints on those. The other portions of the pack are the substrate vermiculite/perilite mix, and the fertilizers. A pH test kit (about $6) is required, but must be purchased separately. So tally: pump is the cheapest one available to get the job done - $20. Timer, again cheapest available - $10. Plastic tub that is cracked - $10. Plastic lifter tubes/plumbing items - about $15. Vermiculite/perilite substrate- $25. Have already replaced both the chemicals - $25 for equal size/type. Tally of $100 bucks does not take into account the plastic lid or the 5 styrofoam tubs. Now I have to replace both the timer and tub? Massive ripoff at a profit to the vendor of $289. Stay away from this looser.
