Review: Best clam knife - I live at the New Jersey shore and have been opening clams for over 40 years. I have tried many many different clam knives thick ones thin ones all kinds of different shapes and sizes. This Dexter-Russell knife is the best by far. I still have a draw full of different clam knives but this is the only one I use. I have told many people about this knife and highly recommend it. It is just the right thickness has a perfect taper to it is sharp enough to fit between the clam shells but not so sharp that you cut yourself and most important it is extremely comfortable in my hand. It is a very well made knife and a good value. I prefer the plastic handle it feels better in my hand and is more hygienic. Review: No Problems - If you're having problems opening a clam with this knife, it's your problem, not the knife. Some clams have been bashed around so much that there isn't an easily defined entry point. For me that's less than 10 percent, and I steam those. I've opened 2 dozen clams a week for a year with this knife, no problems. There's not one nick on it. If you have to use brute force, you're not in the slot, and your gonna slip off. I like top necks which are about 2 3/4" across, easier to hold, and let you know you're eating a clam. Try lime and a good chili powder. I rinse and dry the knife. That's it. Skol!

Best clam knife I have ever owned
I've been shucking clams all my life, but this is the first knife I've ever used that allows me to open every single clam at the edges of the shell opposite the hinge. With other knives, I would occasionally have to pry the shell open at the hinge, which works, but is more difficult. This knife is thinner than others I've had but not sharp.

Tried and true
I have the DR oyster knife, which I love, and their quality comes through again on this clam knife. I love raw clams, and I especially love the big quahogs. Not the easiest clam to get into. However, this little beauty does it each and every time. And on those occasions where blade has skittered along the shell ridges (usually b/c I didn't ice the clam long enough), there's been no damage done to the knife. The join is nice and snug with no areas where bacteria can duck in and hide. Good, slightly ridged grip. I'll never use another brand for oyster or clam.

Good knife
Long time Dexter fan. I always has a tough time with clams. Oysters are easier for me. But what it was, was I had the wrong knife. This makes life easier. Good purchase.

A Decent Clam Knife with Room For Improvement
When it comes to shucking clams, this is my knife of choice. However, I often find myself having a hard time pressing through the shell to shuck; I had to either apply great force or hammer it through (I take the latter). I often line the clam up with the knife over on top and smash it through with little to no scratched shell. I guess if there's any real problem with it is that there's no weight in it. If the knife was made harder with a heavier grip and tougher metal, I can press through easier (from personal experience using a heavier clam knife).

Functions exceptionally and stays sharp.
Excellent clam knife! Have opened 4 dozen clams with no need to "go from the back" on a single clam. Blade is solid, but thin and properly tapered for ease of sliding into the clam. Also, after 4 dozen clams opened, my old knife would have required sharpening... this one is still sharp and ready for more.
