how do you mount unit?

The sending unit separates allowing you to insert the batteries and then mount the base with two small screws. Put the cover back on and you should be good to go.

does it retain info when batteries are changed

Hello George, If the batteries are removed from the display unit, all data is cleared. If batteries are removed from the outdoor sensor only, the display unit will retain its data. Can this device record rain start time and end time? (ex. it started raining at 1:30am and ended at 5:23am.)

Hello Gabriel, This unit does not have that feature, however, it does keep records of rainfall totals for today, yesterday, the past 7 days, up to the 13 previous months, and year to date.
