Is the letter J free standing?

I ordered a letter A and yes it was "free standing".

Where is the on/off switch located? Back or side?

The switch is on the back, so if you hang it up you do need to take it down to turn on/off. It's not that much of a hassle though.

Would it be possible to hard wire these to have on a switch as a more permanent decoration?

I am no electrician! This letter is battery operated. Highly unlikely it can be hardwired.

why is there no B or Y?

There are 27 letters( ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ&) and 10 numbers(0123456789) for selection, if some letter or number you couldn't find right now, just wait for a while(normally 2-7days), it will be back in stock soon.
