Festive drama inspired by the works of the acclaimed painter, Thomas Kinkade. The films tells the story of how a small community and an ageing man named Glen (Peter O'Toole) help a family to save the only home they've ever known. Along the way, they teach a young man, Thomas Kinkade (Jared Padelecki), the meaning of love, friendship, and what it means to be an artist.

Ordered by accident but liked the movie
The movie at first did not seem to fit in with the movie title and description. The movie is very interesting and was based on actual events. Turned out to be a good Christmas movie.

Waste of money
The story is very nice BUT THE SOUND IS AWFUL! For over half the movie you can not hear what is being said. You have to read the subtitles the whole time and you can't watch the movie if you are watching them.

One of my favorite Christmas movies.
I should start off saying, I love everything about Christmas movies...all kinds. I will watch the sappiest, silliest, cheesiest movie, if it involves Christmas. That being said, I have a few favorites that I watch year after year and the Christmas Cottage is on that short list. I have seen the other reviews bashing this movie and it makes me so incredibly sad. Especially those doing it calling themselves Christians (as I am a Christian also) and getting all righteous about it. This isn't a made up Hallmark movie. This movie is based on Thomas Kinkade's life. None of our lives are perfect from beginning to end, so this kind of criticism, is just tiring. The first time we watched it, my kids would have been 8 & 6. Yes, there is some *mild* swearing. Yes, they're in a bar at times. Yes, there is the dad with the girly magazines. Those are very small pieces of the movie and not blaring in your face. My kids didn't even take notice...and believe me, they noticed plenty. They asked lots of questions through the movie. Not one was about any of those things. BUT my children have been raised that some people do speak that way, but that's not for us. They understand some people go to bars, but it doesn't mean that we have to join them. It bothers me that instead of enjoying the bonds of the people in this town, the love being shown, people coming together that normally wouldn't...people are saying it's a horrible, not fit for family movie. To me, it's exactly what Christmas (and Christmas movies) should be about. I leave with a warm feeling every time I watch it. Oh, the kids are now 14 &12...they love it as well. Definitely a family favorite in this house!!

Poor sound quality
I want to give this movie five stars as it portrays the beautiful story of one of my favorite artists, Thomas Kincade; his life, his love of art, his inspiration, his ability to find beauty all around him. The only flaw I found was sound quality was very poor and we had to turn our volume all the way to maximum (100) and still could barely hear it.

Warm and moving Christmas biopic from Thomas Kinkade's past!
This one has quite the cast! It's a moving and occasionally funny look into artist Thomas Kinkade's past, and an old artist named Glen (Peter O'Toole) who ended up inspiring him to greatness. Other well-known actors with small roles in this film include the town's bumbling mayor (Chris Elliott), Glen's agent Sidney (Edward Asner), and the little old lady who plays the organ at church (Charlotte Rae). Basically, the story follows the planning for the town's Christmas pageant, which includes Kinkade being commissioned to paint a mural which ends up inspiring everybody. Again, the storyline is rather simple, but it's the casting that makes it work. A fun, inspiring little Christmas tale.

A Christmas Slice of LIght from Thomas Kinkade
The Christmas Cottage is an excellent film to watch for the holidays. I first saw it on the Hallmark Channel and sat down to watch it because it starred two of my favorite actors, Jared Padalecki, and Peter O'Toole. After seeing the film, I am now a fan of it as well. The story is based on a Christmas experienced by Thomas Kinkade, the famed painter of light. Returng home from school for the holidays he learns that his Mother, (Marcia Gay Hardin) is about to lose the family home, a lovely, but time-worn cottage. Along with his brother Kinkade trys to raise the money needed to save the cottage by painting a mural of the town in time for Christmas celebrations. We soon find out that Kinkade has a mentor, a famous artist played by Peter O' Toole. He loves Kinkade like a son, but beingn at the end of his life, and talent, does not seem to be able to help.I'll say no more of the plot, but there are moments of humor, laughs and tears. The Christmas Cottage is now a permanent part of my annual holiday viewing. Once you've seen it, I am sure it will be the same for you.

Undemanding Feelgood Film for the Festive Season
No, it's not a great film. Not even a particularly good one. The whole thing feels like a TV production made on a rather tight budget (and for all I know that's just what it is). But if you are in need of a bit of fluffy escapism with a feelgood ending around Christmas time this may serve the purpose. The loosely biographical story of the young American painter Thomas Kinkade is rather slow and quiet, it's about family and friendship and community spirit, and it's inspirational (or at least meant to be). It's undemanding, but it may keep you entertained on a long wet winter evening. The only two names among the cast I was familiar with are Peter O'Toole and Marcia Gay Harden. It's certainly not worth watching this for the sake of Mr O'Toole. His appearance amounts to no more than a couple of short cameos. Marcia Gay Harden has rather more screen time. She is lovely to look at and her performance is solid enough. Other reviewers have remarked on the rather wooden acting and for the most part I cannot disagree. However, I will say that the actor playing young Mr Kinkade is at least very likable. Not a memorable film, but if you don't expect too much and don't spend too much on the DVD you may enjoy it well enough. Picture and sound quality of the DVD I bought are fine. English subtitles are available for those who may need them.

You will need a hanky.
I bought this because one of the reviews said "if there is a Christmas film you would want to see each year its this one". I was curious. I loved this film and will be watching it every year. It is inspiring and made me see things a bit differently.

Heart warming story
This is truly an amazing christmas story. It bring hope, love, joy, community sprit, family heartbreak, an amazing story.I first bought this movie as I was interested to see how Jared Padalecki acted outside of horror. I already knew he had the ability to do good drama but, wanted to see him in a different light. I was'nt disappointed. For someone so young to play the emotional scenes alongside Peter O'Toole and make it really convincing was amazing. He really is a very talented actor.Once I had watched it I wanted to watch it again. Everytime I watch I always get something new out of it. It seems fresh each time in so many different ways.It is based on a true story of a young artist struggling to find a place in the art world where he can make a difference. He has left his home town for the big city in order to do this. As yet nothing has happened. It is on a return journey home with his brother that he find out who he really is and how he can make a difference in not only his life but those around him. He is able through his painting to bring the whole community together and to help them all realise they each have an important part to play in each others lives, even the dogs have a part to play.Since watching this movie I have looked up the work of Thomas Kinkade and it is truly magical. I would recomend anyone to do this, he brings a whole new meaning to the word LIGHT. I have never seen painting like his before.

Review
I bought this DVD for two reasons; the first because I love the early work of Thomas Kinkade and thought this would be a bit of a biopic of his early life. Secondly, I read the many glowing reviews about how great this film is. Well, I'm sorry to say the film did not live up to either expectation and in my opinion was a complete waste of time and money. The 'story', if you can call it that is nonsense, wrapped up with bad acting, humour that was not remotely funny and a pace which was far too slow. Added to this the dialogue was mumbled in places making it hard to hear what was going on, but to be honest by this time I had lost interest. I wouldn't have given the film any stars if that was an option, but I suppose the cover on the DVD was nice.

Not Good
Sorry if you are one of the people who like this film, but we found it poorly acted, a boring script and we lost interest in it after about 30 minutes. It is based upon the early life of Thomas Kinkade and how his home town celebrated a Christmas. It focuses on TK's relationship with a well known artist who also lives in the same town. This could have been a good film, but poor acting and a poor script left us bored and longing for the film to end.
