Eden Lake

I'm not understanding why some people are saying this is the worst film ever made; it's far from being that status. Yes, it does have non sensical things that make you want to pull your hair out, but isn't that most horror? This movie is fairly fast paced with lots of suspense. It does have gore, though it is very surface level gore. It could have definitely been more brutal, but there is definitely shock factor because the villains are children and that is always a taboo subject. Anyways for a freebie, it is worth a watch.SPOILER ALERTPeople think this movie is pointless because the protagonist doesn't get the last laugh. It is not pointless, there is a deeper message about how harmful behaviors are passed down through generations. It also shows how social psychology and group think lead people to do terrible terrible things, and how it always spirals downhill fast. Towards the end we completely understand why these children do what they do and we can see how this violence is allowed to blossom in the lead antagonist. The real horror is knowing that boy went unchecked and will surely evolve into a more vicious monster down the line.

Not bad

Trust me, I've seem them all, and I normally look for them uncut and all. You just name them, I've most likely seen' em. This is not the most graphic of the bunch.... not by a long shot. No gang rape or that sort of thing, as it's usually the case, and no revenge in the strict sense of the term, even though this is somewhat sold as that... Not too elaborate, either. Instead, just brutally honest. Sticks to logical consequences snowballing out of control, which has been done a zillion times before. On the other hand, no relief whatsoever. NONE. ZERO! Just the most grueling, heart and gut wrenching ride into the farthest reaches of human evil... The worst people can do to each other if given the chance, the closest glimpse at the depths of Hell you are ever likely to get as a moviegoer. I can truly say that nothing could have prepared me for what I just saw. You know from the beginning it's gonna be real bad, but this goes way farther anything I could've ever remotely imagined. The saddest part is that, except for their idea of what you can do after an injury to the foot, -for those of you who mind about "plausibility" or are just plain picky-, is all TOO BELIEVABLE-. I dare say; just take a look at your neighborhood's Middle or High Schools. Most definitely, like Spinoza would put in one of his writings, there's no freedom outside of society... only the jungle; and that's too nice a way to put it. There is no end to how much hate and rage the human heart can harbor and what it can do. The only "positive" afterthought I can come up with is that it makes you stop and think about who we usually conceive as victims ... there's nothing to cling on anymore to pass judgment. The Last House on the Left is the grandmother of this kind of films. Well, the "formula" is turned upside down and, in my book, finally outdone. Positively, not for everyone. Wouldn't dream of showing this to anyone with depression or anger management issues. Actually, I have no idea who else would "like" it as much as I "did." From here henceforth, holds the dubious honor of being the most effective horror movie I've ever seen. More of an endurance test, but not the way we expect from bad movies. Sadly, this is too well done to think of it that way. The bleakest portrayal of human nature I've experienced. Horror it does deliver, raw, live and bloody!

This movie was very good, and yet so very excruciating. The couple just couldn't catch a break! Spoiler - I have never seen a movie where the main characters were kicked and beat down over and over again with no ups. I feel so bad for them! Just a sweet couple trying to get away and evil took full advantage. Excellent acting by all including the evil children. I thought maybe something decent could happen at the very end, but no, another dead end :(

I looked this movie up because of a little article. Something about 'the best movie you'll never want to see again'. I quite agree with that. Themes like this scare me so much more than supernatural horror because it's hatred and evil that regular people are capable of. The kind of evil that humans do to other humans all the time. How groupthink can take hold from just one instigator and all of a sudden you have a mob is very real and horrifying to watch.Everyone involved in the making of this movie did it excellently. I couldn't find fault in any of the actors or their lines. Their pain was believable, down to the blood. Yes, believable blood is a detail that really matters to me! When it's clearly fake I am reminded that I am watching something fake, thus pulling me out. Real looking blood and I sink further into the horror of the rest of it. All of that is what earned this 5 stars from me.Definitely a rough watch. I very nearly turned it off at one point. I tell you I won't soon forget Eden Lake. But would I watch it again? I'm really not sure I could. Once was enough for me!

I' have given this film 4.5 stars if the web page had let me. Thrilling. Horrific. It's William Golding' "Lord of the Flies" without the rescue...

"Eden Lake" ist kein Film, in dem blühende Fantasie uns mit Blutfontänen, herausgerissenen Innereien oder eine aus Menschen angerichtete Schlachtplatte das Gruseln lehren soll. Wie oft kann man sich be isolchen Streifen zurücklehnen und sagen, daß so etwas nur im Film möglich sei.Wer sich in Gefahr begibt, den bringt sie um, aber hier sehen wir keine Abenteurer, die Kannibalen zum Opfer fallen, Schurken, die aus Lust am Töten Menschenjagd betreiben, sondern ein ganz normales Ehepaar (Michael Fassbender und Kelly Reilly), die sich von Kindern und Halbwüchsigen nur belästigt fühlen, von diesen aber bald in einer Hetzjagd in eine Hölle geschickt werden, kein Alltag, aber jederzeit so möglich , nicht an den Haaren herbeigezogen.Beim Camping- Urlaub am Eden Lake entwickelt sich díe Gegend für das Ehepaar nicht als das namensgebende Paradies, sondern als Jagdrevier, in dem sie das Wild darstellen.Nachdem sie von einer Gruppe Jugendlicher mit BMX-Rädern durch lautstarke Ghettoblaster-Musik und einen seibernden Kampfhund belästigt werden, will die klügere Frau nachgeben , er sich aber nicht von ein paar Halbwüchsigen, die mit üblen Schimpfworten um sich werfen, vertreiben lassen. "Wir waren zuerst hier", beharrt er gegenüber der Frau, und als in Rahmen einer schon heftigen Rangelei der Kampfhund des Anführers der Gruppe getötet wird, müssen sie um ihr Leben fürchten. Und als auch noch der Wagen , von den Kindern entwendet, ins Spiel kommt, mit dem sie schon fast umgebrettert wurden, ist noch nichts Schlimmes passiert, aber jetzt ist das Nachgeben zu spät. "Sie kennen uns und unsere Namen " stellt der Anführer fest, der die Gruppe dominiert und einzelne regelrecht einschüchtert, er hat das Ehepar zum Tode verurteilt, die anderen machen zum Teil zunächst unberührt, zum Teil aber schon widerwillig mit.Am Ende des Filmes sind wiederholt aufkeimende Hoffnung auf einen Ausweg brutal zerstört, der letzte sichere Zufluchtsort erweist sich als tödliche Falle.Manch selbsternannter "Hardcorehorrorfan" berichtete nach einem der eher unglaubwürdige Gewaltfilme, in dene literweise "Blut" spritzt, dass er selbst ihn das Grauen gelehrt hätte, unglaubwürdiger Horror durch billige Effekte.Was hier passiert, ist viel beeindruckender, ruft Ungläubigkeit und blankes Entsetzen hervor, weil der Film intelligent ist. Er zeigt, daß keine blühende Fantasie und Effekthascherei um des Nervenkitzels anhaltend beeindruckt, er ist kein Film, den man abhakt und sich schon auf die nächste Variante freut, da man selber ja in Sicherheit ist, er zeigt, dass, wenn auch selten, aus einem zunächst als ärgerlich, aber letztlich harmlos erscheinenden Geschehen grausam mitleidlos ein Kampf auf Leben und Tod entstehen kann, das hier gezeigte ist fiktional, aber in der Realität jederzeit möglich und in ähnlicher oder noch schlimmerer Form schon passiert.Der Film zeigt auch, dass wie hier ein waschechter Psychopath nicht aus purer Mordlust loslegt, sondern aus kaltem Kalkül eine Gruppe von schwachen Kindern und Jugendlichen so manipulieren kann, daß sie zuerst halbherzig mitmachen, dann suggeriert bekommen, daß ein Zurück für sie schlimmste Folgen, schlimmste Konsequenzen habe, so daß sie, zum Teil vorher kotzend, sich an Quälereien beteiligen. Mitgehangen, mitgefangen, was sie machen entsetzt sie sichtbar, aber es nicht zu machen, halten sie für die schlechtere Alternative. Der Psychopath zeigt sadistische Züge, aber es ist anzunehmen, daß die Opfer der Jagd davongekommen wären, wenn er sicher gewesen wäre, daß von ihnen keine Gefahr für ihn ausgehen würde. Die Clique hätte ihren Spaß gehabt, und die Gruppe könnte unbehelligt und angstfrei zu den Eltern zurückkehren, zumal solche Gestalten oft wissen, daß ihr Alter drastische Konsequenzen nicht zulässt.Viele Psychopathen halten sich meistens an gewisse Regeln des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens, und die meisten der Kids wollen unreif ihren "Spaß" haben , zeigen, daß sie dazugehören, in einer Hackordnung ihren Platz verbessern, es den Großen mal zeigen, und verlieren das Interesse, wenn ihre Provokation nicht zur gewünschten Raktion führt, was die Frau intuitiv erkannt hat, aber der Mann will nicht als Memme dastehen, und so entsteht aus einem im Vergleich mit den Folgen banalen Anlaß eine Katastrophe.Für die von dem Psychopathen manipulierten Kids ist die Menschenjagd anfangs vielleicht noch ein derber Spaß, die grausame Konsequenz des Anführers haben sie nicht richtig eigeschätzt oder das Gefühl, noch aussteigen zu können, wenn es zu "heftig" werde.Die Mit-Jäger sind keine Teufel in Kindergestalt, aber ein Psychopath, der auch Gefühle zeigt, als sein Hund stirbt, reicht bei dieser Gruppe von Möchtegern-Starken aus, sich auf ein "Spiel" einzulassen mit einem Anführer, der so konsequent seine eigene Person vor alles andere stellt, dass das Töten von Menschen nichts anderes ist als eine Notwendigkeit zu vermeiden, daß ihm Ungemach passiert, gewissenlos räumt er nur Hindernisse aus seinem richtigen Weg., er ist nicht un-, er ist amoralisch.Jeder Mensch kann in gefährliche Situationen kommen, das erschütternde ist, wenn es eine Situation ist, bei der man mit einer Gefahr nicht rechnet, ein falscher Schritt löst eine Lawine aus, die alles niederwalzt, und diese Lawine besteht hier aus einer Gruppe von Kids, bei der ein Psychopath schwache Gestalten mitreißt, die nicht ahnten, dass aus ihnen eine Todesschwadron werden soll.Mehrfach lässt der Film hoffen, daß nicht alles verloren ist, diese Hoffnungen werden immer brutal zerstört, ein Rettungsanker erweist sich als trügerisch, betrügerisch, und eine scheinbar sichere Zuflucht als Todesfalle, ohne die geringste Aussicht auf unsere Genugtuung durch ausgleichende Gerechtigkeit. Die Banalität des Bösen, die Grausamkeit der Natur, die Opfer fordert für einige Exemplare der "Krone der Schöpfung", die sich als Entwicklung in eine nicht erwartete Inkompatibilität von einzelnen Exemplaren der Gattung Homo Sapiens darstellt, die mit der Norm sowenig vereinbar sind wie ein tollwütiges Tier.Die Eheleute werden von den beiden Darstellern mitreißend,uns mitleiden lassend, gespielt. Der Film läßt uns immer wieder Hoffnung auf Rettung, auf ausgleichende Gerechtigkeit, auf Schadensbegrenzung schöpfen, aber jedes Sicherheit und Rettung versprechende Licht am Horizont erweistsich nicht als Wegweiser, als Leuchtfeuer, sondern als Feuer, daß den Weg ins Verderben ausleuchtet. Das Leuchtfeuer ist ein Feuer, mit dem Strandräuber ein Schiff in Not an den Klippen zerschellen lassen.Kaum ein anderer Film zeigt so konsequent, wie Hoffnungen zerstört werden, aber auch, wie Grauen nicht gezeigt werden muß. Aus einer Flamme wird kein sichbares tödliches Feuer, das Grauen entsteht vor unserem inneren Auge, wir hören etwas, das in uns die schrecklichsten Bilder entstehen lässt, ohne dass eine Wachspuppe schmilzt. Ein fehlerhaftes Exemplar der Evolution bringt , aus eigener Sicht kosequent und nicht unnötig grausam handelnd, zahlreiche Mitglieder der eigenen Gattung ums Leben. In der Evolution geht es nicht gnädig zu, und wer weiß, ob nicht irgendwann das Gewissen sich als passageres Ereignis erweist, was für uns aktuell eine Schreckensvision ist, aber was kümmert das die Evolution? Ist irgendwann das für uns Krankhafte die Norm? Hat der Psychopath nicht einen Überlebensvorteil und wird uns irgenwann als Vorläufer seiner Gattung ansehen, eine aussterbende oder ausgestorbene Gattung? Was uns erschreckt ist, dass das was uns böse erscheint, nicht bewußt böse ist, man es ihm nicht ansieht, es sieht sich als richtig, andere als falsch, da schwach an. Wir empfinden Grauen, wo der Psychopath Gleichgültigkeit oder gar Genugtuung empfindet.Und das können wir nicht verstehen. Der einzige moralische Maßstab für ihn ist er selber, Verlust ist für ihn sein toter Hund, Mitmenschen nur, wenn sie ihm nützlich sind. Können sie eine Gefahr für ihn darstellen oder ihm zu unangenehm werden, darf oder muß er sich sogar ihrer entledigen. Wenn seine Mitjäger sterben, ist er wütend, da er seine Ziele schwerer erreichen kann, nicht traurig.Und wir? Wir bleiben entsetzt und ratlos zurück, nachdem der Film uns brutal ernüchtert und jede Hoffnung zerstört hat. Ist es ein Horrorfilm? Nicht in üblichen Sinne, er zeigt, daß die Natur grausam sein kann, wo wir es nicht erwarten, Opfer zu werden.Doc Halliday

This is a beautifully shot and acted movie and one has to say one of the nastiest I have ever seen.Fasbender and Reilley suffer terribly from early on after being attacked by some of the most ferocious youths this side of a Hills Have Eyes movie.A youn Jack O'onnell shows his future potential as an actor as one of the vilest characters I can remember and he is still a teenager.If this was a true depiction of the youth of this country God help us.A really downbeat ending offers no comfort at all.Its bleak with a captial B.The director does a first class job of keeping the shocks and gore coming.The dvd looks crisp and sharp and there are some interesting interviews with director and stars as extras.It is a hard movie to watch and I fear many will not want a repeat viewing.A must for horror fans.

Some reviews on here are complaining about the film being disgusting or offensive. The only thing that is offensive about this film is how it plays to the feminist tune. The same tune that most horror films have been playing for about 40 years now. Talk about repetition. If you put most men and most women into this very situation the movie shows us. More men will come out on top than these horror movies make you believe. THAT'S A FACT!.The two yuppy types the gang target. They are two of the most stupid people in horror movie history. Like for instance the guy finds the home that one of the gang stays. He sees their bikes lying in the front garden on the way past the house. He stops and goes up to the house. Then, get this, he goes into the house as the back door is open. He then wanders through the house and finds himself upstairs. WHO DOES THAT!? If most of us were in that situation we're have stood at the door and chapped or gave a shout to who's inside. If no answer we'd have left. Not him though.The only saviour of this entire film is the ending. And only because it goes against everything horror stands for nowadays. She doesn't get to out smart them and kill them all in revenge for what they did. That is the feminist BS that mainstream Hollywood has fed horror fans for decades. It's not even remotely realistic that. Combat trained men and men who are survivalists have been slaughtered at the hands of bad guys in horror films. But we're supposed to believe a normal girl or even woman with no fighting skills can get the upper hand on the baddies and escape before they kill her. Or she ends up killing them then escapes. Nope. As if. Not when battle hardened soldiers and men in general get used as fodder for the killer(s).The film makes her yuppy husband look like an antagonist as well as the thug gang who targets them through him not ignoring them and their antics. Which initially didn't warrant a Charles Bronson wannabe mentality to confront them. Simply ignoring them and/or moving on would have fixed the situation. Also the dog scene where it got knifed. That was the fault of the thugs who owned the dog. But the yuppy guy apologized to them for it happening saying it was an accident. He shouldn't have done that. The thugs caused it by rushing him with blades. Also him saying sorry just poured petrol onto an already volatile situation. Too many stupid mistake being made by the characters in this film. Her boyfriend (husband-to-be) should not have tried to confront the gang. Because unless your name is John Wick or Steven Seagal confronting a gang of modern youths is just begging for trouble. They have no fear of the police or punishment. The law is too lenient to their kind.The ending is bleak. It is all the better for it. Too many Disney endings to Horror nowadays. Yes she survives all battered ripped and torn. The whole girl power got her that far. She crashes a van she stole from one of the older brothers of one of the thugs. Crashes it into the front garden of the lions den. Then basically staggers into the lions den wounded and looking like she's done 10 rounds in a mud wrestling match. Then she discovers she is in the home of the kids who killed her husband-to-be. The gang of kids/teens are all pals and so are all of their parents according to the finale. The parents of the gang of kids get a call from one of the surviving kids while their victim is there in their house. This causes the parents to all turn on her. She's taken into the bathroom by one of the dads and another guy. We hear her screams. The film ends there. It's all nonsense the way she acted really. She got a spike of wood through her foot. Yet she runs like an Olympic Athlete with a bad limp. Same went for the main woman in Wolf Creek Season 1. She had a punctured lung from a bullet wound. And a leg wound from a bear trap. But she chased a jeep on foot and kept up. Nope.
