Skyfall (UHD/S)

This is the 23rd Bond movie but the 3rd in the Bond-series that star Daniel Craiga’s no-nonsense 007. Following a weaker Quantum Solace in 2008 that suffered from a writers strike, Skyfall is a much superior recovery of form form that is simply very well done from start to finish. With this movie, director Sam Mendes (known at that stage for some fairly thoughtful movies like American Beauty, The Road to Perdition) proves he can deliver spectacular action movies, that much is clear following the traditionally breathtaking opening scene. This he later put in further practice in his brilliant 1917 epos. The exhilirating opening scene is only the proloque that ends with an “Agent down!" message to M by Eve (Naomie Harris) abruptly followed by Adele’s subtle warm title song that is reminiscent of Shirley Bassey’s performance in Moonraker, Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever). In the role of main villain mr Silva, that only makes an appearance after an hour, it would have been hard to find a better qualities actor than Javier Bardem. Silva is modern day criminal, thriving on cybercrime, yet his odd blond hair style properly classifies him as a traditional Bond protagonist. The movie very well balances familiar and new elements although I struggles a little bit with the reappearance of Bond’s Aston Martin. But all in all you’ll get a great mix of drama, action, and subtle jokes.I occasionally buy some expensive 4K movies, in particular since the whole family is a big fan of the franchise and will revisit the movies in future. I'm glad I did that with this movie. The 4K version offers razor-sharp details with immersive character close-ups. The vista’s and wider scenes are striking as well. The digital clarity remains strong even in the many fast-moving action scenes. The Dolby Vision color grading brings good black levels. The movie comes with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1l that is very dynamic and grand.
