John Wesley: A Biography

Interesting read about a very interesting man
John Wesley was a confused, conflicted man. His life, which was extensively researched by the author, was one of contradictions, dedication, stubbornness, self deprivation and inability to show lasting affection for anyone, not even his brother Charles. Possessed of the feeling that he was always right, but at the same time unsure of his salvation and relationship with God, Wesley fought a lot of demons, both human and spiritual. Today he would be considered a kook or a nut, but the Methodist Church (which he never intended to establish)is a monument to Wesleyan theology and Wesley's attitude toward helping his fellow man in any way he and his followers could. Wesley's relationship with women, from his mother Susanna to his wife whom he married later in life is particularly interesting. He loved them, but was unable to commit. Basically, he loved 'em and left 'em. A well-written biography that makes a subject which could easily be boring quite interesting.

His greatness, his zealousness, his foibles..
Very well written, which helps understand the period and circumstances. I'm grateful the author did not attempt to gloss over any aspect of Wesley's life and actions, so we could get to see how an imperfect person (maybe even a jerk at times) do great things.

John Wesley
Since I grew up in the Catholic Church I really did not know anything about John Wesley. I was very surprised how much influence Wesley had on the charismatic movement. His difficulties with women really brought him down to the level of the rest of us! I am mostly impressed with his dedication to what he deemed his "calling." He truly believed that "perfection" was attainable during one's lifetime through diligence and discipline. And Wesley was a great example of both! He often wrote and read as he traveled by horseback throughout the countryside. It was also interesting to learn the influence that john and especially his brother Charles had on the hymns used even in the churches of today.Wesley was a pragmatist and often decided to use "what worked best" in the work of the Lord. He preached to the common people, valued women, and sought out the underclasses with a saving message. John Wesley is truly one of the shapers of modern Christianity.

Admirable Book
John Wesley biographies are rarely page-turners, but I found this to be a surprisingly entertaining read. I particularly appreciate the focus on Wesley's relationships. The contextualization of "Christian perfection" was particularly helpful.

Check what language a book is in before ordering it.
I do not speak or read German and did not notice on the Amazon write-up that it was written in German.I found someone who knows German and gave the book to them.

May not be in the glowing colours that some might write of John Wesley, but seemingly, bearing in mind the 300+ years from which we are viewing the man, a well researched and honest evaluation of the man, his work, and his faith
