Thomas and Beulah (Carnegie Mellon Poetry Series)

I was very pleased with this book. It offers a glimpse into the lives of Thomas and Beulah as they navigate through a tough life. It also gives you a nice glimpse into the struggles of those who may not have experienced the finer things or the freedoms that some are offered.

This remarkable collection won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987. I think she was just 33 when she wrote this and spans roughly 1919 to the 1960s when they died. It is divided into two sections: one from the perspective of her maternal Grandfather Thomas and the second for Grandmother Beulah. Some of the most moving are “Courtship” .. Fine evening may I have the pleasure … I’ll give her a good life. “ These are poems that travel to a different time as “The Zeppelin Factory” . The poems of motherhood are touching “She dreams the babys’ so small she keeps/ misplacing it”

I had bought the Tomas and Beulah for my English: Intro to Poetry and it came like the next day! Such fast delivery! I even got another one for a friend because we're in the same class.

Nice read

This is a major achievement by one of America's finest poets. It has been characterized as a story of an African-American family, but it is much more than that, it is the unfolding of the human heart like a bright poppy into a full bloom and then the sad falling away of the petals. I have regularly returned to this book, and always find it rewarding.

This is a good read. Two stories told by both the husband and wife, their versions of life together and apart.
