Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brush, Round SH #000

Edit: The brush that was received to replace the faulty one has not cracked and performs very well. The sable hairs will split when dry but when wet they keep a very impressive point. Changing to 5 stars Original Review: I love this brand and will continue to purchase these brushes… but I’m only giving it four stars because the $60 #6 immediately cracked around the base of the ferrule after an hour of use. I’ve had brushes last ten years without this happening - I’m more surprised than disappointed. The replacement brush looks like it’ll last longer. Nothing holds paint like Sable and these brushes feel very nice. I did a blind test against the S7 and a cheap Sable off Amazon and could definitely feel the difference. Part of the reason I buy this brand of brushes is because I hope to give them to my kids one day - this purchase did not instill confidence.

I have been an amateur miniature painter for a few years now and decided to get some better brushes. I previously thought the cheap synthetic brushes and the very cost-effective Kolinsky brushes that were $25 a pack of 3 were sufficient to paint. However, I have decided to try and elevate my painting. Since I started getting significantly better miniature paints, I decided I needed to get a high quality Kolinsky brush to paint with. As this one is highly recommended by a lot of miniature painters, I decided to give it a try. After years of using brushes that probably have not cost more than $2 in the past (with exception to a really cheap Kolinksy brush), this one is a game changer. Holds paint very well, keeps a tip, and is very smooth and accurate. As others have pointed out, you do often get a stray hair or two, but cutting them off with a sharp hobby knife or clippers fixes the problem. The only other problem I have is that because they are so expensive comparatively, I waited so long to give them a try. I now regret waiting so long.

This is my favorite brush out of a couple dozen... it can do a whole hell of a lot from moderate detail work to shading and base painting. I put more mileage on this brush than any other and it's held up great.

Despite some of the negative reviews, I decided to give this a try. Unfortunately the first one I received had a bristle caught in the ferrule so it was forming an arch and displacing some of the other bristles. I hoped if I pulled it out I could reshape the others into a point, but no such luck. I couldn't get it to hold a point at all and it just kept splitting. A replacement just arrived with grayish paint dried on the bristles and under the ferrule. It also doesn't have the Winsor & Newton logo on the handle and is ever so slightly shorter than the first. If they're just recirculating the returned brushes, I am giving up on replacements and going elsewhere.

When I got back into painting miniatures several months ago, I did my best to make the financial leap with as much wisdom as possible. I am a master painter of 28mm historical minis. I did a not-so-wise thing by going to local craft hobby stores and purchasing synthetic brushes. Cheap, fast and good in the beginning, I found myself just waiting for these brushes to give out. I even washed them with a popular cleaner. Didn't make a difference. Around 5 or 6 uses, separation and curling inevitably occurred. While not useless, they were not enjoyable to use after a very short time. Despite spending $4 for a brush, I took a step up and invested in a well-known set of Kolinsky sables for around $22 ($3/brush). Much better but I noticed a paucity of actual hairs to their brushes and so, I found myself loading paint in the brush constantly. They did hold up well but, the paint did not go on smoothly. I finally stepped onto the luxury car lot of brushes and invested $12 in a Windsor Newton. There's no going back. They are perfectly shaped and thick. They seem to be impervious to loosing their original quality, especially since I take good care of them. A loaded brush holds so much paint, I find myself making smooth strokes with exceptional results, and reloading about 1/4th the time. I am slowly replacing my brushes with all Windsor Newtons. You will need less brushes overall since a #3 is more than sufficient to paint large areas AND all but the finest of details. An initial investment in 3 or 4 brushes is more than enough. By all means keep your old brushes for priming, washing, dry brushing, etc; but the real painting will be covered by your 3 Windsors. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to under estimate the size of the brushes you'll need. Explanation...while I used to be a big proponent of buying 5/0, 10/0 and even 20/0, all that is out-the-window now. You'll feel silly that you ever did that as a #2 (not 2/0) Windsor is a good place to start. This might seem large compared to what you're used to but, try it first and you'll see. I easily paint pupils with a #2. I purchased a 000 and found it to be minimally useful because the #1, 2 and 3's form a perfect point. This will SAVE you $$$. If you paint 10-15 hrs a week like many of us, you won't be looking for a new brush for at least a year, compared to buying new synthetics every month. Most importantly, painting will become more of a pleasure and your minis will look better. You'll paint faster and you'll dare to become better and try more feats of detail. So take a "$12 chance" on one brush. Start with a #2. You'll be able to do 98% of your painting with it. Then a 0, 1, and 3. I promise you'll wish you made the switch long ago.

Ok, I really, really love these brushes. I'm not at all an expert or pro artist, but in tutorials and how to videos on model painting (warhammer and the like) I kept running into blurbs about how great WIndsor Newton series 7 brushes are, how maybe even GW get's thier brushes made via Windsor Newton, etc. I figured I'd eat the expense an give these brushes a proper try. All I can say is WOW! If you've been painting for a bit, but haven't given one of these brushes a try, I really suggest it. I bought 2->000 all series 7 brushes and each an every one of them was just suberb and has continued to be superb!! I wanted to use them for a few days to really give them a solid work out an see how well they dealt with it and frankly these are the best brushes I have ever used. Again, not being a real pro or artist that actually studied art an such I don't think my opinion is neccessarily as valaubel as someone that is really knowledgable bout these, but if they end up lasting even half as long as my GW an army painter brushes, which I think they will, then this one time the hype is really about something real. These brushes come with a great tip that is easy to maintain and get back into shape with a bit of brush cleaner, they perform just swimmingly!! THey ahve that certain slight stiffness to the bristles, that little bit of spring when you've got a full load of paint that often other brushes don't have. So yeah, they are price-ee, but if, like me, you take your hobby seriously and you want to stack the odss in your favor for a great paint session, knuckle under and buy one or two of them sied close to your current fav and I'd be willing to bet money you'll find you like the windsor Newton brush as your next fav!

Only gave it 5 stars so you would see this post. Brush was cracked and bent, even though packed in a tube. I was surprised when I opened the tube because it was so fancy. I am returning this item but also bought another one from same company. We will see how second one comes. I’m disappointed because I work 80 hrs a week and have little time to paint. Was planning on using it this weekend to paint with and now I can’t. See photos.

I’ve been painting on and off for some time and usually airbrush is my go to tool so didn’t see the need to spend money on expensive sable hair brushes. So recently I picked up hand painting miniatures and some of the good synthetic brushes wouldn’t cut it at all, upon searching internet Windsor and Newton #2 came in highly recommended, WOW I have to admit I never enjoyed hand painting this much absolutely bunkers, it holds paints very well so you don’t have to keep going back to wet pallet as often which makes it easier to keep a wet edge and eliminates visible brush strokes on large flat surfaces, this #2 has a very fine tip so it can do most of the fine intricate stuff including putting on base cote on majority of my projects. I’m still planning to pick up #4 and #00 for really fine detail but this for now is my workhorse. That being said don’t waste money on cheap brushes buy quality once and guarantee you will enjoy painting instead of getting frustrated.
