As Good as the Reviews Say It Is
This is a great countertop oven, perfect for an apartment or smaller kitchen, a more efficient alternative to your stove oven and probably even a great second oven on those days (Thanksgiving, for example) when you need extra oven capacity. Rather than tell you what you can read from more authoritative sources like Wirecutter and Serious Eats, I'll just touch quickly on a few things: (1) What it does -- and it does lots -- it does really well. Baking, roasting, casseroles, you name it, it's great. (2) It has an astonishingly wide range of things it can do. It has a setting for use as a dehydrator, which is a great way to preserve foods, or make your own jerky. It has a super low setting for proofing bread, for goodness sake! (3) Yes it is a hot air fryer. Not this product's problem, but there is no such thing as hot air "frying." Frying, by definition, is done in a hot oil. That's what gives food that taste you (maybe) love. Frankly, I do not understand this concept of hot air frying. But that's what people want, so I guess that's why manufacturers title their ovens with that name. The Breville is as good or better than any competitor as a hot air fryer. Not its fault that's a useless category. (4) "Toaster oven"!? HA. See Item 3 regarding air frying. There is no such thing as a "toaster oven." Again, the Breville is like the starship Enterprise. I should not complain if it does not fit in every parking spot!

Breville makes great ovens, IMO. If you disagree, you're wrong! Fight me!
What should other customers know? You probably mean about this Breville and not the other 1000 things that come to mind. The oven rocks. It is shiny. It gets hot. Not too hot. More like what it shows on the lovely LCD when you turn the big knob. That hot, exactly. It is new, so I'm learning the time period that it takes for each type of food. It's a little different than my last Breville. I had to leave that in the city I fled from. I think the people down the hall knew who I was. I had that one dialed-in regarding how long things were going to take to get cooked how I liked them. The last one was only a couple of years old. It still had a bunch of life left in it, I'll bet. This new one has a bunch of different shelves. Racks? One of them is even round. Someday I'll figure out what it is for. In the meantime, I am using it for pizza. Pizza from the grocery store. Not frozen, but unfrozen. I think it could get a tiny bit hotter on the bottom. The cheese threatens to burn - you ever been threatened by a cheese? It's not great. - before the dough is completely done. I'm hungry. This is my third Breville. I think the first one got dirty and needed replacement. Actually, I have no idea why I replaced it. But I did. Did I mention this one has a big-ish air fryer basket? It does. I wasn't overly familiar with air frying. The last oven that I had, the Easy-Bake 100 that was here when I moved in, said it was an air fryer. Then again, it said a lot of things. Most of which cannot be repeated on this family forum. It left me with the impression that air frying is just putting things in a basket so they could cook from all sides at once. That's nothing like the frying I was familiar with. This one has , like, a fan. The fan has a turbo mode. It's still not like frying. But it does pretty good at "air frying." Better than the Easy Bake. Did I ever tell you about the time I met Eazy-E's son? No? I was on an airplane flying around. Oh, I should stick to the oven story, huh? Some other time. Look, if you want a high quality, shiny, toaster oven that has a big air fry basket, and also has a dial with a bunch of other settings, go with Breville. The model I've got is great. I'd have liked the option of it coming in blue. Or even black. No, blue. They have a model that is blue, but I think this one is superior. It sounds like it but that might just be because it is French. I think. Buy it, you'll love it. I do. It's hot. PS- Don't fight me. That was a joke. Which they'll probably make me edit.

Bigger, better, and quieter than the regular Smart Oven
Our Breville Smart Oven BOV800XL finally broke after 10 years of almost daily use, so it was time to replace it. Another Breville, no question - but which one? The newer Breville model (BOV900BSSUSC, the one in this review) seemed like the obvious choice, but I was afraid it wouldn't fit on the counter or it would get too hot under the cabinets. Short answer: It fits! It doesn't get too hot! It works great! Best choice! How did I live without it?? Long answer, for those who like to overanalyze everything (not that I'd know anything about that...): *** How big is it? *** - Width: 21.5" - Depth: 15" not including handle, 17.25" with handle - Height: 12.375" not including handle, 12.75" with handle See the attached pictures for how it compares with the BOV800XL. *** How loud is it? *** Quieter than the old one. The older 800XL convection fan was loud and almost rattled. The new one has 2 fans: one to cool the electronics and one for convection. Even with both fans, cooking with normal convection is pretty quiet. Airfry turns the convection fan up to 11 and makes a serious whoosh. I don't use airfry much (regular convection works just as well for most things we cook), so it's not a big deal. You want numbers? I got numbers. With the decibel meter sitting on the counter next to the oven: Baseline room noise: 33dB Oven, no convection: 55dB (mostly the electronics fan) Convection: 57 dB Airfry mode: 69 dB (Note that when the fan first starts, it's louder, maybe 66dB, for 1-2 seconds until it gets up to speed. That's how the old 800XL fan sounded all the time.) Check out the attached video if you want to actually hear it. *** How hot does it get? *** After 15 minutes of convection roast at 450°F: - Top front: 215°F - Top back: 160°F - Sides: 140°F - Glass: 235°F - Door: 220°F (top and sides), 170°F (bottom) - Back: 135°F - Wall behind it, a few inches away: 90°F - Cabinet above, 7" clearance: 90°F The cabinet above it does get warmish inside, so if you store your chocolate or cooking oils or other heat-sensitive stuff there, you might have a problem. *** How well does it work? *** Great! Having a 2nd oven is amazing for when I don't want to heat the big one, or need to cook things at 2 different temperatures, or need to keep something warm while the rest of the food finishes cooking. This oven has 10 settings, but I use only a few of them: - Toast: Slower than a toaster, but cooks the slices evenly. - Bake/roast: Temperate is accurate, cooks mostly evenly (there's a slightly hotter spot in the front right). - Airfry: I never had a standalone airfryer, so I can't compare. It does make things crispier compared with normal convection. Usually I just use the airfry basket with the fan on normal convection, and that seems fine. - Slow cook: Never used it. - Reheat: As far I as I can tell, the only difference between reheat and bake/roast is that for reheat, the timer starts when the oven starts heating. For bake and roast, the timer starts after the oven is already heated. Subtle difference, but surprisingly convenient for not overcooking your leftovers. tl;dr: Oven is good. I like it.

A close second to a Wolf
While I have loved using my wolf oven for 10 years, it finally baked it's last biscuits. So far the breville is formidable. While the exterior seems less durable than the wolf and gets quite hot on the top, the inside competes well. This model is big enough to fit a 10 "cast iron pan or a le creuset oval baking dish 15.5 x 9.1 inches. The oven seems to heat evenly and quickly ,plenty of options for shelf height adjustment and plenty of options for cooking. Knobs respond well without any slop and choices are straight forward. For cons compared to the wolf , the only items that I can see that could use are a more durable shell and a probe thermostat that interacts with the unit. Aside from that, it has a good warranty. I give it 5 stars

UPDATED!!!!! Great oven, (WAS) terrible (BUT NOW NOT) customer service from Breville
*PLEASE SEE LAST PARAGRAH FOR UPDATED REVIEW* SEP25 - I have owned this oven for three years now and have loved it! It's been a workhorse and an essential tool in the kitchen combined with my cooktop. Easy to use, perfect size (not too much of a foot print but can cook a decent sized turkey), air fryer function gets everything nice and crispy, super convection cooks fast...it's wonderful! I did a fair amount of research before paying the $320 for it in SEP2022. It was a big investment for me and a pricy oven for the size but I felt it was worth it. Some reviews complained of steam coming from the door and vents. That did happen to me but I understand that to be a normal function. Some customers had issues with temperature reduction over time causing longer cooking periods. Happily, I didn't have that issue in 3 years. However, what I don't like about this oven is due to Breville itself. While cleaning the oven I BARELY touched the lower quartz heating element with a rag while wiping off the guards around the element and it shattered. I thought I was being careful. Take caution to not even make the slightest contact with these elements - they are unreasonably fragile!!! I have tried to contact Breville for replacement parts - they do NOT respond. I called, I tried their online chat (a chat agent is never available), and when I requested a callback after calling them 2 minutes after opening business hours (amazingly their call volume was too high at that early time to take my call), they never called back after saying they would "in a of couple hours". Research online has revealed others that had the same issue with the heating elements and cannot get replacement parts because Breville is not permitting this. I did find a replacement heating element with a part number that said it would work for this model for $20. It ended up being a couple inches short and was clearly for a smaller, probably discontinued or older, model likely before the Breville parts crack-down. A heating element should be something a customer should be able to replace, especially when they are this fragile and could be considered a consumable part. It is wrong in my opinion for Breville to not give customers this option and restrict replacement parts to pans and air fry baskets. The alternatives are to send the entire oven in for repair (who pays for that when the warranty is over and how much?) or purchase a new one. It's disappointing for this to be a "throw away" item for such a simple fix. I work hard for my money and value it. It's no small thing to drop $320 (now it's $400) on a fancy toaster oven for some of us. Just let me repair it on my own, Breville. Make the parts available. Breville customer service and conscious efforts at preventing customers the ability for reasonable repairs, and also enabling an eco-UNFRIENDLY throw away society, would be 1 star or less. But I can't deny the oven worked great and was something I recommended to others. I loved it. That would have been 5 star review. UPDATE NOV 25 - I have updated my 3 star rating to 4 stars. As stated above, this is a great oven and well worth the money for its functionality and performance for my application. After making contact with Breville customer support, I can NO longer complain about their service as adamantly. First off, my dodgy voicemail system didn't notify that Breville DID call me back several hours after my initial call. A week later I found out that they tried calling twice so this was not their fault that I didn't receive those messages. I am still bothered that they have a chat function that is useless but when I did call Breville back following their voice messages, they weren't available immediately but did return my call later as promised. I explained my issue with the heating element and the customer service rep arranged to have a box sent to me to send the unit to them for repair, at their cost. A few days later I received a box in the mail to pack up the oven and less than 2 weeks later was returned an oven in terrific working order. I was very happy about this. My Breville oven was well missed when it was broken and I am very happy to have a repaired solution and without any hassle or hidden repair fees or costs to myself. I would give this 4.5 stars if it were possible. Why not 5?- because I still think a small part like an element should be available to buy for the technically inclined like myself to do our own repairs. What if I hadn't received such a positive response from Breville? Also, restricting parts enables a throw away culture. Meanwhile, I still highly recommend this oven but don't touch those heating elements. Ever!

A few things you should be aware of....
ADDED TO REVIEW ON 4/29/18: Some problems with the oven after a few months of use. First, the door hinge got stuck several times causing the door not to close. This issue has been reported in other Amazon reviews of this product. Next, the timer stopped working as well. I contacted Breville and they will be replacing the oven, but I am a little suspicious of quality control after now paying attention to a few negative reviews on this page. ------------------ This was not my first choice All I wanted was an air fryer. I was intrigued by the fact that there were appliances that could fry foods without the need for oil. I spent countless hours pouring over reviews of leading air fryer models. I was set on purchasing the most expensive one by Philips at nearly $300. I then read a comment somewhere that if I was going to spend $300 on an air fryer, I might as well spend an extra $100 on the Breville Smart Oven as I would essentially be getting a full-service oven with high-capacity air frying capability. I decided to take the chance on that option despite a few reviews saying that dedicated air fryer appliances did a slightly better job air frying than this particular oven. This was an expensive purchase, no doubt. However, I had an aging Toastmaster oven that was nearly 30 years old but still kickin' butt! There really was no need to replace it, but you could just imagine what a huge upgrade in modernization this Breville presented. At first, the Breville Smart Oven seems intimidating. There is an elaborate selection screen and lots of dials and buttons. However, just experimenting for several minutes, I was able to quickly figure out the basics. The oven already has temperature and time presets for just about any cooking need you may have. From that point, the dials simply alter heating temperatures and cooking times. Here are some things you should be aware of.... There is a design flaw in this oven that puts one at a huge disadvantage if placed on a higher shelf, which I initially did, above my microwave. The door opens top to bottom. This puts a huge strain on anyone placing and removing food from the oven as the door blocks arm movement. It would have been a far better choice for Breville to make a door that swings open from the side. Additionally, if placed on a higher shelf, you cannot read the menu screen. I have read many complaints in Amazon reviews that the screen is unreadable. It is unreadable if placed on a shelf. If you place it on a counter at eye level or below, there is no issue reading the screen. So, the big point here is that you should plan to place this on a counter, not a shelf. The oven works very well in all the cooking tests I put it through. One of the things I am not fond of is that everything starts with a preheat. However, once the preheat is done (and you will get several beeps indicating such), the cooking time begins counting down. This is a pain-in-the-neck because it takes about a minute to grab your food and place it in the oven. At that point, you have to turn the dial back to the proper cooking time that the oven initially sets for you. The best thing Breville could have done is to "freeze" the cooking time once preheat is done and then let the user push the button again to start the actual cooking countdown. So, let me talk about the essential aspect of this oven which is its air frying capability.... The Breville includes a large air frying tray that allows air to circulate through its screen door design. It allows an ample amount of french fries to be placed on it. The best advice I can give is to ignore the instructions given on the package of french fries. Use the actual recommended time that Breville programs into its Air Fryer menu selection. You really want to cook it at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time. Breville does an excellent job with its preset temperature and time. I tried air frying both Nathans french fries and Orida Tater Tots. The french fries came out very good -- crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. However, something about it just didn't scream "fried" to me. At best, the results were slightly better than just baking it in the oven. They really tasted more like baked fries rather than those fried in oil. The Tater Tots came out better. Those were really crisp on the outside and comparable to those I would cook in a pan with a little bit of oil. I think, overall, the problem with the Breville air fryer function is that you are frying without oil. That can be a good thing, but at the same time, you aren't getting that flavor which oil provides. If you actually fried french fries in oil and placed them in a blind taste next to the air fryer version, I would bet anyone would instantly pick the fried version as the better tasting product. I haven't been able to compare the Breville to one of the dedicated Air Fryer appliances, and perhaps they really do a more phenomenal job. The best I can say is that the Breville does a great job at coming close to producing actual fried results, but it won't pass a blind test against the real thing. Another issue I have is the lack of support from Breville themselves. Before purchasing this oven, I wrote their customer support an email asking how much distance this oven needed to be placed from the back wall. Breville never answered me. That is a bit concerning when this is customer support you may need to rely on should something go wrong with this oven. To answer my question, there are nubs on the back of the oven that gives you proper back wall placement. People have complained that the oven does smoke. I have experienced this with every item I have cooked. For me, it's no big deal. As long as the oven is working as expected, I don't care if it gives off a small amount of smoke. I would recommend purchasing and placing baking matts in the bottom grill tray as it can be a chore cleaning without it. You can purchase these matts for dirt cheap on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKJDYL1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Overall, this is a terrific oven, though with some really bad design choices that force one to not be able to mount it on a higher shelf. Please do take note of this when considering a purchase.

I couldn’t be happier with this Breville!
I’ve had this oven a little over a month now, and I love it! It replaces my Cuisinart Convection Steam Oven – two years into owning that toaster oven, the steam option died, so I was left with convection bake, and broil, and toast. This Breville is miles ahead in my opinion. I cook a lot, I bake a lot. If I can use both my Bosch oven and my toaster oven, I’m happy. If I can use only the toaster oven, I’m even happier (doesn’t heat the house up as much, the energy consumption is less). I’ve roasted a whole chicken, made air fryer chicken nuggets and chicken parmesan, roasted mixed vegetables, made air fryer sweet potato fries, roasted nuts in the shells, baked 3 types of cookies and 1 cake, 2 batches of muffins (3rd came out today, house smells like cinnamon), baked beans, and well… a lot of cooking in the past month. Oh, and toast and bagels every morning! I’ve used the Roast, Bake, Broil, Air Fryer, Toast, Bagel, Cookies (yes, cookies!), and Proof settings. What I love about the Breville: *The knob controls. My Cuisinart used 1 knob for primary controls – multiple controls. The Breville is so user friendly – my non-cooking husband has no problems figuring it out. The controls and buttons are all labeled and easy to understand. *It’s spacious for a toaster oven. I mean, toaster ovens shouldn’t be overly huge, they need to fit on a counter. I can fit 2 medium casseroles (reheating is such a joy with this oven!). I can fit my 12-muffin pan in it. I can fit a small roast and a small whole chicken in it. *It has a dedicated convection button. Love that and so easy to use. It has a “phase” button. You can set it to brown a roast, then bake (or roast) it. I often need to broil after I bake something, and that’s what the phase is for – does it after you program it, automatically. 2 different cooking methods and temps and times, one time setting. *It has a countdown timer which shuts the oven off. Some like this, some don’t. I do. I will still use a separate timer, and often set the oven a little longer than needed – but, you can always add time, or change the temperature while you are cooking. You don’t have to stop the oven to do this. *It stops the timer when you open the door. Thank you, Breville. You get it. *It’s a toaster oven and makes great toast! Nice and crunchy outside, softer inside. Settings for light to dark and setting for number of slices. Do keep in mind, a larger toaster oven will take a bit longer to toast than a very small one. *Air fryer… I didn’t want another item to store. But we are trying to eat healthier. While this isn’t a dedicated air fryer and might not have quite the power, we’ve really enjoyed our crispy chicken nuggets and chicken parm, the crisp of the sweet potato fries (took me a while to get the timing and method right, but wowsers!). Comes with a really nice sized air fryer basket. I spray it with a bit of olive oil, and find even if cheese gets stuck on, a soak in sudsy water and a quick rub with a stainless steel cleaning pad makes it sparkle again. *Oh, and the magnet on both sides of the door – it’s for the air fryer basket, which can get very hot… so when you open the door the air fryer basket gets pulled out a ways for you. I love the person who came up with that brilliant idea! *Comes with a pizza pan (haven’t used that yet) and a roasting pan, which oddly, I have used for the first time in my life. I line it with foil or parchment, and the weight of it is perfect for baking fish, chicken, or roasting veggies. Anything, really. *I’ve set this under an 18” high cabinet (standard) and after 1-1/2 hours baking, and finishing with a quick broil, the cabinet underside has not gotten overheated. *I love the crumb tray/removable bottom. Many toasters have this now. I lined mine with a 500 F Teflon oven mat (purchased on Amazon, of course), in case I get any drips or messes. Easy to clean! *It preheats very quickly with a clear flashing ‘preheating’ text, and an alarm tells you it’s time to put your food in, and another lets you know when the time is up (plus the interior light comes on just before, so you can take a look at the progress). Honestly, I could go on and on. I’ve found no negatives thus far. I find myself saying each time I use it: "I love this oven!". Highly recommend!

My first big Breville disappointment
Update 3/8/26 - I changed my review to one star: New problem encountered that goes beyond being a general nuisance. After the oven preheat finishes and baking/roasting is supposed to begin, it gets stuck and the countdown timer doesn't activate. The oven reverts from the orange cooking screen to the main blue screen and shuts off. I then have to turn it back on and it goes through the full preheat cycle again, then sometimes it works, but sometimes it fails again. I have no intention of seeking repair service under the warranty. There are just too many problems and I am tired of dealing with it. I am fortunate my credit card company offers money back protection over a certain amount and they issued a refund. It's going out in the trash. Original review was three stars: I bought this in early October 2025. I'm really underwhelmed with the overall performance. I have several Breville appliances that I love. This one is not one of them. - It is very slow to preheat. If you don't wait for it to preheat food takes so much longer to cook. - The toast function is an absolute waste of time. The bottom is never toasted on anything even using the #7 darkest setting and placing the bread dead center on the appropriate rack position as marked. - The air fryer function makes a huge mess and the interior top of the oven gets badly splattered and is very difficult to clean. Dedicated air fryers work so much faster and better. - The glass is always dirty from the interior racks always hitting the door and food splattering onto the rack edges then transferring to the glass where the racks touch it (they are too close to the door) when air frying or roasting. I have to clean it constantly and it seems like some spots just don't ever wash off. - I find I have to raise the temperature from 10 to sometimes 25 or 50 degrees on all my standard recipes. The bake, roast and air fry settings (even set to convection or super convection) all seem to run colder than any compact or full sized oven or air fryer that I have ever used. - The air fryer tray tends to get stuck under the little silver rack guides when pushing it in or pulling it out because you have to slightly tip it to get it to slide under the guide, and I've had food tipping, sliding and close to falling off the tray because of it. - The air fryer tray that came with it is aluminum so it doesn't connect with the door magnets to pop out when you open the door. It also can't go in the dishwasher. I immediately replaced it with a stainless steel air fryer tray by a different manufacturer that fits perfectly, works with the door magnets and is dishwasher safe. - The reheat setting is useless as programmed. Nothing heats correctly at the time and temperature it's preset to use. It doesn't preheat on that setting so the reheating countdown timer starts running in a cold oven and the food is still cold when the 15 minute preset shuts off. I tried bumping the heat and the time quite a bit and still the food wasn't heated correctly. I don't bother using that setting anymore. - In certain baking situations I notice moisture and steam leaking out of the top right side where the door meets the gasket. The door doesn't seem to seal tightly in that corner. My husband said the gasket is improperly affixed to the interior frame around the door. He is eventually going to remove and replace it. - I only had the oven for two weeks when the door began randomly refusing to close and was stuck open about two inches. I found myself pushing it very hard to get it to close and it was making a popping noise at the hinge. My husband used a tool to stabilize and twist the left door hinge back into a straight position because he said it was not properly aligned. It has been better since he did it, but at times it still feels like it's a struggle to push the door closed. He said if it gets stuck again he will replace the door springs. Overall I am disappointed. I personally don't recommend it and I wish I had my 10 year old DeLonghi Levenza oven this replaced back again. I miss it.

Wow
We live the full time tiny home life, we purchased this as a full time oven, this is the best purchase we've made for this lifestyle. The door actually seals all the way, the heat is perfectly accurate, it's extremely easy to set up and it looks amazing. The price of this nearly scared us away, we purchased the larger sized one, I'm so glad we went with it. As soon as you start pulling it out of the box you can see, and feel, the difference in quality. We were using one of those cheaper convection ovens and compared to this we may as well have been using a candle under a plate. We've burned through a lot of ovens, of varrying quality, and this is hands down the best we've purchased. It maintains an even temperature, though it does remind you to turn your food, and can even fit our Dutch oven with the lid on. The other extra wide oven we used couldn't fit the lid and took forever to cook anything in it. If you're using this for the tiny home lifestyle I highly recommend it, we have been blown away by the quality of the oven and how well if evenly cooks our foods. You can tell they put a lot of thought into making this and it's on a totally different level compared to all of its competitors. I can't speak as to how long the oven lasts, we've only had it for a few weeks, but you can see it's build to last a lifetime. If you're only using it part time you may want to go with something cheaper, it you're looking for something to actually use as an oven then hit the buy now button, you won't regret it. Edit on February 16th 2023. This over is still going strong and works exactly like it did when we bought it. We use it heavily and none of the markings have worn off and it still cooks to perfection. This is hands down the best Amazon purchase I’ve ever made.

BEST OVEN EVER
BEST OVEN EVER!! Take a look at the videos on YouTube... It really is that good. My husband and I have a top 10 list of things that if we ever had to start over and rebuy things in a home, this would come in at the top 2! Everything just tastes better... Cooked perfectly with a hint of crispiness. I can't cook well, but now our meals taste as good if not better than takeout. This is great since we are working towards a lifestyle change and not eating out much is high on our priority list. I haven't tried all of the features, but its great! Comes with plenty of accessories, but wish it came with the cutting board for the top. Does not heat up the kitchen much and side/back heat is virtually a non issue. We test drove another brand before this one (only due to price) and we felt it was a fire hazard with the amount of hot air pumped out of the back. Not this one!! Its perfect! The interior size is worth every penny!! Other ovens say they will hold a 12" pizza, but you can't fit a 12" pan... You have to put the pizza on the rack! Really? This one fits a 13" pan! Pizza and fries come out perfect. I've heard some people say the airfry basket is hard to clean and stains, but we haven't had that issue. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Great Oven
Since I purchased it, I haven't had the need to use my bigger oven. This Smart Oven is great, especially the "air fry" feature ... it crisps things nicely. It isn't (and doesn't claim to be) a true air-fryer, but it does a great job on things that you want crisp (breaded chicken burgers, french fries) etc. The settings are easy to use and it is easy to clean. The fan, especially when using the super-convection feature is on, is louder than other toaster ovens, but this really isn't a toaster oven -- it's a small oven that is the only oven a couple, or even a small family, will need. The oven temperature is very precise (I checked it with an oven thermometer) and it is much easier to regulate the temperature than it is for a bigger oven. The heat is very even and it heats-up very quickly. Like most other Breville products that I have, this one solidly built and looks great.
