The Upanishads (Deluxe Silk Hardbound)

Summarised version of Upanishads
Book Review: The Upnishads by Swami ParamanandaI love scriptures of any culture, be it Holy Bible, Gita, or Vedas (like this Upanishad). If, like myself, you love scriptures, don't miss out on this book. It clarifies our thoughts on our perception of God. We, humans, tend to find him everywhere. But according to our Hindu scholars, he can be found within. It is known as the 'Atman,' who is God; he is the one and only 'Brahman.'It is overall a beautiful and easy-to-read book.

GREAT learning material
Mostly the epic in English language is excellent translation and revealing. However, the translation seems to lack depth while explaining the sacred secrets of life .On the whole, a great grand learning experience.

Very beautiful, Pocket size, High Quality Hardback
I loved the book as soon as I opened the package. The size very cute, its a pocket sized book with very beautiful and high quality feel cover. The hardback feel very sturdy and of high quality bind. Pages are sewn and glued, that makes book last very veey long. The quality of pages used is also very good.I have earlier used Everyman Library edition they use the beat quality acid free paper. So this book is not as good as everyman but the pages are still high value for the money I paid(199).The color of pages is also offwhite-cream which make it very readable(I dislike plain white pages, as they provide too much contrast and make it uneasy for eyes to read the text)The text size is also very accurate and I have no problem reading it.The book only contains 3 Upanishads(attached index page photograph), but are the most reccomended ones,I will surely reccomend this book to others.oh and I missed- it also have a beautiful red colored ribbon bookmark.

Review
I have started reading this book with much expectation. As I complete following are my views on it (1) It falls well short of expectation (2) In the effort to do one to one translation much of the essence of the original text is missed. In fact some of the portions of the book indicates that the auther has no clue about the meaning of the original text (3) I do not feel that it has been an original work of Yogananda. Rather some disciple of him, most likely born in west, must have compiled it from various speeches of him and published it in his name .It is quite evident as he tries to, unnecessarily, correlate some of the Upanishad teachings with Biblical teachings.(4) The Biblical impact is more prominent in few chapters were the concept of His command, punishment and sin gets slight overtone. Overall I felt the book lacks content.

All upanishads are not included in this book.
Only ishopnishad, kathopnishad and kenopanishad is present. This is misleading. The binding is very good and paper quality is good.

Easy to Read and Understand
When embarking on a journey into the unknown, it is useful to have a guide who knows the way. Swami Paramananda thoroughly understands the Upanishads in his beautifully bound book. There are at least 108 Upanishads. Of those, around 10 are considered to the 'major' ones. Swami Paramananda explains and elucidates three of these: the Isa, the Katha, and the Kena Upanishads. The Upanishads come from the four Vedas. The Vedas are a treasure trove of ancient wisdom. They contain mantras and instructions for use in rituals and sacrifices. They also contain teachings about the ultimate nature of existence, and eschatological teachings explaining the identity of the soul (Atman) with the Absolute (Brahman). These teachings are the Upanishads. The teachings are often couched in charming stories such as the story of Nachiketas. Swami Paramananda clearly explains and elaborates the meaning and importance of each the three Upanishads. Though written in the beginning of the 20th century, it is so clear, well written, and easy to understand, it could have been written yesterday.
