How is the sound quality?

Your amp will be the deciding factor for sound quality but I'm happy with it being pushed by a tiny 50 x4 Kenwood digital amp. Clean and crisp.

Does the grill come off so that it can be mounted inside the door?

Yes, but after you mount it and replace the door skin you'll want to cut a hole roughly the size of the speaker so the sound is not trapped inside. You can put the grill back on after that.
