Volcanoes (Smithsonian-science)

Not a fun book
This has wonderful facts in it about volcanoes and it explains a lot about the earthquakes that can cause a volcano to erupt and about Mt Helen and some about Hawaii but I feel that it spent too much time talking Mt St. Helen. This has quite a few pages and I think they could have spent talking more about underground magma calderas like Yellowstone. The pictures were not that good in this book. They showed a few big pictures of lava spewing out and lava rivers but mostly of the mountains like Helen before they erupted which is just a snow covered mountain. There were just too many pictures of that. This was also very encyclopedia like. We have the Trains book by Seymour Simon and my son loves it. It does have lots of facts that my 4 yr old son doesn't understand but the pictures are better and the facts seem to be a little more spread out about a variety of facts about trains. This would be a good book for an middle schooler doing a book report on volcanoes.

Bought for my son
My 7 year old son is obsessed with Volcano's so I purchased this for him for Christmas. It is one of his favorite books and he is able to follow along and I caught him reading along with it. He is on the autism spectrum and has some issues with reading so I was worried if he would be able to read this book or if it would be too old for him but he has no problem reading it and is in love with it.

Lots of great info
I got this for my 7 year old for his birthday along with The Ultimate Volcano Science Kit - Make It Erupt! . He really enjoyed it, and there is a lot of great info for young scientists. There's info about volcanoes around the world, how they work, and a bit of history to go along with it. Some of the pictures are a little dated, but they kept his attention and my 3 year olds also had fun reading with us.

Beautiful, Accessible, and Informative
A couple of months ago, my 4-year-old was struck with a sudden and insatiable fascination with volcanoes. He hungrily devoured every volcano documentary available on Netflix (over and over), and a friend recommended this book. Since its arrival in February, we have never even put this book away. Both of my sons can very nearly recite it, and they love to pore over the gorgeous, exciting pictures that are on every page. We read it every single day. It's a great, great book for curious kids!

Entertaining with plenty of local color. Doesn't get above its raising, but gets the job done nicely. The dog was a nice touch and LOTS of surfing references. Better than average and who wouldn't love a volcano?

The photos are fantastic. The content
My son loves this book. The photos are fantastic. The content, if you read the whole thing, is a bit too advanced for him (3 years), but I think this book will be one he will enjoy for years to come. Lots of information about volcanoes on a kids level.
