Wonderful book!
I loved this book and as with all the other Kristan Higgins books I’ve read hated to have it end.

3.5
A woman smart enough to become a doctor couldn’t have maintained a 15 year old’s unrealistic obsession for 15 years. The Joe relationship was just too unbelievable. Millie was ying and yang all by herself. Very distracting. Liked the ending but too much Millie/Joe fantasy for me.

Great story
Mi!!ie has been in love with Joe Carpenter since she was 14. After completing med school she comes back home with a plan to win his love. It doesn't go exactly was she plans but, in the end, it's actually much better.

Fun, but the dog
I enjoyed reading this book. I thought the characterization was good. The story was cute and I liked the info about her cottage and how she took care of it. Kristin Higgins needs to know, however, that constant reference to a dog humping people is not as cute as she thinks it is. This is the second of her books I’ve read and I couldn’t believe she did it again.

Wake up, Millie!
"But I felt stupid, crying by myself, and besides, Digger kept trying to climb up on my lap and lick the delicious combination of salty tears and Cheetos dust off my face. I pushed him down and blew my nose. I wanted to call someone....There was nobody. Nobody would understand. Boo hoo hoo. Pulling the afghan over me, I fumbled for the remote and clicked on the TV, unaware that the next day, everything would change"This one started off slow, but I liked it more and more as the book went on. I always enjoy a good evil sister/good sister angle. Much of the humor in this one came from the reader being able to see through Millie's crush from the very beginning, and her being so blind and clueless as to his true character and intelligence level. When is she finally going to see through him and recognize her true feelings for Sam? It kept me in a constant state of anticipation. (What will finally make the light turn on??) As it turns out, it is pretty bad. Kristan is very great at showing a character's personality, rather than telling. It's up to the reader to read between the lines. Kristan has a whole set of gimmicks that she uses in every single book. Someone should really do a spreadsheet. Cute interjection? lovable old people? unlovable old people? quirky townspeople? Secondary romance? older relatives' marriage on the rocks? Mean but misunderstood relative? check check check and check. Still, I enjoy even the clichés written by her, I get drawn in every time, into a funny, fun, and romantic comfort zone.**5 out of 5 stars**

Oh, Kristan---it's me, not you!
I'd always remembered this book as my least favorite of Kristan Higgins' novels. Convinced that the problem must be with my sieve-like memory rather than with the book itself, I tried rereading it a couple of months ago, and was pleased by how adorable and engaging and...OH. I soon recalled all too vividly why I could barely bring myself to finish this one the first time around. I try very hard to avoid using spoilers in my reviews, but in order to go beyond a very unhelpful "eh, it just didn't work for me!", this time they can't be avoided. Bear in mind, though, that these spoilers are evident to the reader quite early on!***************SPOILER ALERT********************I can deal with Millie stalking the guy she's convinced she's meant to be with though very, very obviously isn't. It's played mostly for laughs rather than as a sign of instability, and sets up a nice 'be careful what you wish for' theme that I can get behind very easily. And so many of KH's heroines are adorably pathetic in this same exact, strangely likable way that it barely fazes me by now. What DOES bother me is that, in all too typical KH-ish fashion, we devote so much time to this clearly-going-nowhere storyline about the guy who's so obviously wrong for her that we hardly get to know the actual "hero" at all. Even the fact that we barely get to know the main male love interest, though, is so typical of KH's books (most of which I feel are more "chick lit" than romance anyway) that it's something I'd happily accept, only......that love interest happens to be her sister's ex-husband! And not someone her sister married years ago on a whim and quickly divorced, but someone her sister had been married to for about TWO DECADES! And you can't even dismiss it as ancient history: when the books opens, Sam had split from Millie's sister fairly recently...so recently that he's still actively mourning his marriage to our heroine's sister through much of the book.I don't come from an especially rigid or traditional family---far from it, in fact. But even I can't imagine pursuing my recently divorced brother-in-law, a guy who had been sleeping with my sister for more than 20 years! The sister is highly unlikable, by the way, though for me that in no way makes this okay---it just means we get stuck reading about an unlikable character. This scenario happens to be a squirm-worthy dealbreaker for me, but if it isn't for you, you'll probably enjoy this book. :)***************END OF SPOILERS****************Like pretty much everything that KH writes, this book has more than its share of charm, humor and warmth. If the issue described above happens to be in the category of things that doesn't bother you (and if you have a fairly high tolerance for KH's typically needy, stalker-y yet sneakily lovable heroines), then I'd recommend hitting that 'buy' button. If the setup happens to make you squirm like I did, though, rest assured that she has many other delightful, mood-lifting books from which to choose!

Fast Becoming a Favorite Author
This is my second Kristan Higgins book, and like the first one (Just one of the guys), it's not a ROMANCE romance novel - why they insist on listing her books as ROMANCE novels is beyond me when clearly they aren't - it's awesomely good. The woman can WRITE!!!!The story grabs you and sucks you into their world. Kinda predictable sure, kinda silly of course, her wanting to lose weight and get in shape for a GUY? In the 21st century? And you're a DOCTOR? GEESH.But I'm thinking that's what's so awesomely great about Ms Higgins' books. They're not perfect. But you're always glad you read it. And you can never put it down till you're done. Thank GOD I bought this on my Kindle! I can just download the next one and keep going.Ms Higgins has been added to my list of Authors I can buy and read, sight unseen, without even reading the back of the book first. Her writing is just that good. Not perfect. And this blows my mind....not FORMULAIC either....How'd she DO that?Like I said. THE WOMAN CAN REALLY WRITE!

This is a very well written, well edited rom com and it most certainly made me laugh. In that I couldn't quite reconcile a thirty year old woman, and a doctor at that, maintaining a crush for 16 years on a guy who has some good qualities but isn't a great person, I looked past that. I suppose I imagined this as more YA. And I enjoyed the true romance at the end, if a bit rushed. The author has a way with words and anyone who has had an extended crush and has attempted a makeover can relate.

Buy only if you are desperate for a higgins fix.
Kristan higgins has written a handful of really great books and some not so great as well. This falls into the latter category and recycles many ideas she has used before. I just didn't like the idea of the h falling for brother in law. I also didn't buy how someone so silly could be a doctor and i guess i am over the h always having a dog (usually from a pound), doing worthy volunteer work with teens or old people and a cute fixer upper house which she inherited. Perhaps i have read too many of higgins' books? But then, the ones i love, i really love! Her latest 'waiting on you' was great. Perhaps she has matured as a writer and i should stop buying her older books.

Not My Favourite KH Novel
Don't get me wrong - it's funny and heart wrenching and a fairly good read. But the story line left a lot to be desired and the end felt rushed. There wasn't enough story with Millie and Sam - it was disappointing.

Fresh and exciting romance
Millie Barnes is finally getting her life together. She's nearly got her dream job, she's finally happy with her body, she's just got herself the cutest puppy and to top it all off - the guy she has loved her entire life has started to notice that she's alive! But sometimes perfection isn't all it's cracked up to be - especially when her sister's ex Sam Nickerson is so much more distracting than he should be. As she helps him nurse his broken heart she suddenly realises that she's putting her own in jeopardy. And maybe the thing she has dreamed of her whole life isn't really what she wants after all. This is the debut novel by Kristan Higgins and it really is a spectacular story. Written in first person, the story tells of the ups and downs of Millie as she tries to get her life, and especially her love life, in order. Millie is a down to earth, interesting and truly likeable character while Sam is a fantastically heroic hero. And the pair are perfect for each other. What I really liked about the story itself is that it wasn't predictable. It is quite unusual to see a story about a girl and her sister's ex, but it works really well and the writing keeps you emotionally involved. The quality of the storytelling also didn't leave you disappointed at the end which I have found sometimes happens with books written in the first person. The ending was climactic, romantic and very much worth the wait. All in all, this was a book that I loved. I felt involved with the characters, loved the writing and will definitely be looking out for other novels by Kristan Higgins in the future. If you're looking for a fun, sweet and romantic read then you can't go wrong with this book.
