Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost (Poetry for Young People, 1)

Missing favorite poem
This is a beautifully illustrated book with some superb choices of Robert Frost’s poetry. I just can’t understand how the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was omitted in the “winter” section. Certainly it is one of his most famous poems and extremely easy to memorize especially for young readers. I was very disappointed to find it was not included.

Watch Out! This anthology includes "Out! Out!" the poem about cutting one's hand off with a chainsaw!
I love Robert Frost's poems and was eager to share them with my nieces and nephews for Christmas. I just thought they could have done a lot better on selecting child-friendly poems for younger children. When we received these, I did not give them out because it includes the poem "Out, Out!" which is a poem about a boy using a chain saw to do work...here is an excerpt...His sister stood beside him in her apronTo tell them ‘Supper.’ At the word, the saw,As if to prove saws knew what supper meant,Leaped out at the boy’s hand, or seemed to leap—He must have given the hand. However it was,Neither refused the meeting. But the hand! The boy’s first outcry was a rueful laugh,As he swung toward them holding up the handHalf in appeal, but half as if to keepThe life from spilling. Then the boy saw all—Since he was old enough to know, big boyDoing a man’s work, though a child at heart—He saw all spoiled. ‘Don’t let him cut my hand off—The doctor, when he comes. Don’t let him, sister!’So. But the hand was gone already. The doctor put him in the dark of ether. He lay and puffed his lips out with his breath....Anyway, I did not want my young nieces' and nephews' first exposure to this author to include this poem about a boy cutting his hand off and spilling blood everywhere. I suppose it could be valuable as a cautionary tale...but I didn't wish to alarm or offend the parents so I did not give them out. It's kind of funny actually...not the poem but this little story!I personally always hated this poem! But that's just my personal opinion....

2 sets of grands, 2 households, all of whom I teach
I love this series - but more importantly - my grandchildren love this series as well - and on our "play" days will go and get one of this series of books on poetry to read a poem that they recently enjoyed. This has become a favorite past time (well - that and music! and especially poetry set to music!) And this includes the newest household I teach!

Exceeded our expectations
My 7 year old daughter ordered this book with my encouragement and we both love it. She was looking for poetry books which would be appropriate for her age (we live in Australia and she is in Grade 1). What makes this book special is the beautiful illustrations, one for each poem. It is divided up by seasons and has a short explanation of the poem at the bottom of each page as well as some points to make a child think about what they have read. I love Robert Frost's poems, coming from a New England family, my favourite being 'The road not taken'. We have enjoyed this book together and this weekend my daughter is going to show this book to my father and I know they will enjoy it together and talk about what the poems mean to him. It helps bring her American heritage to life.

He has had to memorize and recite some of Frost's poems and seems to enjoy it. On a side note
Got this book for my son's homeschool grade 5 Build Your Own Library secular curriculum. He has had to memorize and recite some of Frost's poems and seems to enjoy it. On a side note, I thought I *loved* frost because of the Two Roads Diverged poem but now that we have read more of his works...he's alright. Book came quickly and arrived in great condition.

Excellent collection, missing something crucial
It seems odd that a book of poems by Robert Frost for children, especially one that is organized around poems on each of the seasons of the year, doesn't include "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." This is one of Frost's best known and most beloved poems and it's an ideal one for children.

Great book
I gave away a lot of these little books as gifts. I found the receivers to be excited about them.

Lovely book
My mother had bought this for me, and I read from it too my son since he was born. Now I've purchased it for his about-to- be born son. Have cherished Frost's poetry all my life, as a New Englander his sights and feels are my own. This book is beautifully illustrated and perfect to pass on the tradition

Good
I love the poetry of Robert Frost and bought this book to read to my grandchildren aged 5 and 3. I think the illustrations could be better at capturing the interest of young children. I subsequently purchased the illustrated book of just one Frost poem, 'Walking through the woods on a snowy evening'. My grandchildren adore that. Perhaps because it is just one poem and the book has more pictures per line of poetry and these pictures relate a story. It clicks w them. Clearly for older children 'poetry for young people' may be just right although parents will need to provide the context as the pictures are too New England perhaps for our children in the UK.
