It is metal free, and very comfortable too!

Q: Does this work well for super long hair? My hair is to the point that I can just about sit on it (almost 3 feet in length) and medium thickness.

I don't think so as it is not that sturdy. When I use it, it tends to slip out of my hair unless I put it in a bun and place the pin just right. My hair is medium length and thickness.

No it will not hold your hair in place. My hair was past my shoulders and thick and I wasn't able to get it to hold my hair.
