Staples Our Mail-Order Food Packets Perfectly - But It Is LARGE
Our Mail-Order Prepared Meal company decided to push off the work of gathering the three packets that constitute a meal on to us customers. The food is exceptional and not found elsewhere, so we are stuck. What has this got to do with a stapler? Well, our very ergonomically small and perfect Swingline uses standard staples that have 1/4 inch 'legs', and while they punch through the six cardboard layers plus plastic that make up a meal 'package', they do not 'clasp' the packages securely - and you need to really bear down to even get the staples to have *any* 'grab'. So we got this monster of a stapler - compared with our 5-inch long 2-inch high Swingline that uses standard 1/4-inch long staple legs - and will need to find an out-of-the-way drawer or cabinet to stick it in when not in use. 'Ergonomically' it requires little effort to staple our meal packages together, and it does that very well. The only 'Con' we see is its large size - it stands over four inches tall and is around 10 inches long. But it gets the job done. Others may want to be aware of this interesting [to us] tidbit . . . The 3/8 inch leg staples that it uses - and it comes with a box of 500 of these staples, so we probably did not need to buy the tin of several thousand staples - have an interesting 'clasping' pattern to accommodate the 3/8 inch long staple 'legs'. Because the staple 'head' is only 1/2 inch long - the 'standard' staple 'legs' are 1/4 inch long - if you only staple a few pages, when the stapler 'clasps' the legs, the 1/4 inch legs fold into a 1/2 inch pattern that lines up with the 1/2 inch 'head'. With that understanding, when *this* stapler 'clasps' the 3/8 inch long staple legs, the legs would 'overlap' by 1/8 inch if only a few pages get stapled together. So the Swingline folks designed this stapler so that the 'clasping' mechanism 'clasps' the legs at a 5 or 10-degree offset angle so that the 'folded' legs are offset from each other and do not 'stack up' on each other. You probably have to see it to get the full picture. I don't know if this is peculiar to Swingline - maybe all 3/8 inch leg-length staplers do this. So back to the 'Review' . . . If you need to staple through something that is thicker than around 1/8 inch - half the 'standard' staple 1/4 inch 'leg' length - then this stapler will definitely do the job. If you need it to also be 'storable' in your slide-open kitchen drawers, then you may not be totally happy with this 4-inch high by 10-inch long stapler.

Impressed
The stapler is bigger than I had expected, it has a space age look that says "I'm all business". Someone obviously put some effort into the overall clean-line design. Basically, it was easy to open and put the staples in, that is once I understood how the staple chamber opened. Most staplers operate by lifting the handle but this one you push a button and pull the staple chamber forward and out from the front. A few more package directions would have been nice, as I hate pushing and pulling on any new equipment for fear of damaging it without trying. It did a great job of stapling the 10 page test I experimented on. The funny thing is, I now own four Swingline staplers. One small desk model I have had probably 50 years, which still staples as well as the day it was purchased even though it doesn't do over 8 or 9 pages. It was bought when the boys started school. I have a long arm Swingline which is great for what it is intended, but a little awkward for sitting on a desk. Then there is the Swingline purchased about 7 years ago that was not working, and a total aggravation. After getting a price to have it repaired I decided it would be cheaper to buy a new one. I debated whether to even purchase another Swingline but I'm a sucker for a lifetime guarantee. So here is this beauty, but on the day it arrived I had decided on trying to repair the one that didn't work on my own. Amazing what can be done with a little Vaseline on a Q-tip rubbed the inside walls of the chamber where the staples ride. All those metal filings and gunk was stopping the spring mechanism from moving freely, and the staple would jam and bend before going through the paper, then the jam would need to be fished out of the end of the stapler with a pair of tweezers. Guess everything needs a little maintenance now and then. I really had not planned on having a stapler collection...but the Optima looks like a keeper, and it uses the same exact staples as the one bought 7 years ago.

Words cannot describe how much I love this stapler!
I work in an office and I have to staple A LOT of paperwork. I have very thick packets that I have to staple and have tried so many staplers trying to find the right one that can handle 60 or 70 sheets without being too gigantic to fit on my desk. I have tried a few electric staplers. I was really excited about one but it kept jamming and was impossible to unjam because of the fact that it was electric. The manufacturer was nice to continually send new ones when this happened but eventually they stopped after four replacements and I gave up on the idea of an electric stapler. So I had to begin the search for yet another stapler and decided on a manual one this time. This stapler is THE STAPLER to beat ALL STAPLERS. Words cannot describe how much I love this stapler! It really does staple 60 sheets with ease (I counted). I have used it for about a month now and it has not jammed once yet. It looks nice on my desk and is extremely easy to use. When you use it there is a nice "springy" feeling to it as you push down on the top and release. Compared to the old cheap models that most people have which you have to press down hard on and can hurt your wrist after awhile, this is a really nice change. To refill the staples there is a button the end. You press it and the part to load staples immediately springs out, making it very easy to load the staples and then it pushes back in and clicks into place very easily. This might seem like too much detail and maybe I am a bit of a nerd, but I do spend most of my week in an office and try to find joy in the small things. This stapler brings me much joy while at work! The only negative thing I can say is that if you are stapling a smaller amount of paperwork (less than 3 pages), the staple is kind of loose and you have to press down on it a bit to get it to close a little better. Other than that I think this stapler is the one to outshine all other staplers!

Bought one for myself after using one on the job for 6 years!
I purchased this stapler for my own business after having used the exact same model for the past 6 years. It really does a good job with large stacks of paper. Very rarely jams. Incredibly sturdy and can take some abuse. I definitely recommend using the Optima staples as they are strong and do not cause jams that some lesser quality staples do.

Great Stapler!
Works very well. It doesn't make the staples rounded up - just flat, but I've felt numerous ones, and it doesn't scratch you at all. I think it does bend them up slightly into the paper, but they probably make the edges of the staples rounded (not sharp), so it helps not to get scratched. This is perhaps one of the reason that they want you to use Optima brand of staples - both has chisel point to staple in well, and probably the 'soft' edges as well. But again, it does a solid job of stapling - the staple-ends are not loose at all, but set tightly against the paper - and all with an easy push down of the handle. UPDATE: I wonder about the many people who are talking about jamming; I haven't had one jam. Perhaps they're not using the correct staples. There are different thicknesses; a staple for more sheets needs to be thicker (besides longer). They recommended their brand of staples (Optima). Perhaps that's the issue. Also, I have found that sometimes, one leg of the staple is not totally against the paper, and since this stapler doesn't make the edges rounded - just bent up slightly towards the paper, you could perhaps get scratched. But most are against the paper well. (Flat is supposed to be an advantage, as it takes somewhat less space). THIS IS PERHAPS THE EASIEST HIGH CAPACITY STAPLER TO USE! Since the distance the handle has to travel from up to down is a few times that of others, it 'falls' giving more leverage; it somehow accomplishments better like that. It's very easy to staple; much easier than another brand I tried, or even another Swingline model. THANK YOU SWINGLINE, AND THANK YOU AMAZON - IT'S GREAT TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WORKING BEHIND THE SCENES TO HELP YOU GET WHAT YOU NEED!!! There are so many different kinds of tools and materials, and the fact that there are people working hard to see that these things happen, is great! Much appreciation!!!

Great for stapling thicker stacks of paper
This thing has been an absolute lifesaver. No more leaning on regular staplers, breaking them, banging my head off of shelves, or jamming. Worth every penny. Kudos to Swingline for a great product. As a PhD student, I often have to print and staple long academic papers. I've stapled up to 40 pages together without issue. From my estimation, it would easily do the 20-30 more it advertises. The mechanism makes the stapling process very easy. I've had zero jams so far, even trying quick imprecise motions to see if I could coax a jam out of it. I would actually venture that using this stapler on a large stack of papers is easier than using a regular stapler on a smaller stack due to the way the mechanism assists. The quality seems top notch. Though it takes up more room than a standard stapler, it sits nicely on my desk. The stapled product is great, as the long, high-capacity staples are folded over nicely. They don't catch on other papers or fabric. A sleeve holding 500 of the Optima high capacity jam-free staples were included. This is probably more than I'll ever need, but since the item description wasn't clear, I went ahead and ordered a box of extra staples that shipped free with Prime as an add-on to the stapler. I think it was $4 for them, and I got 5,000. I now have a lifetime supply of staples, and they came in a nice aluminum box as well. If you need to staple large stacks of paper, get this thing. At the price, it's a steal. Much more economical than the electric behemoths that take up half a desk and make awful amounts of noise.

Large and in Charge
In my line of work (finance) the entire industry seems to revolve around killing trees. From the enhanced amount of regulatory requirements, to the fact that everything we show people is on charts and graphs, it all generates large stacks of paperwork. In this world, I do a lot of stapling. I then transport said stapled materials with other stacks of paper. Then they get filed for, apparently, eternity with all of their friends. Point being... staplers are oddly something that I have become very aware of and are extremely important to my sanity. In an effort to find a stapler that could handle large stacks of paper, bend the staples to where they wouldn't catch on other paper, not jam, and be easy to refill; I came across the Swingline Optima 70. One Word Review: "Success" Pros: - It can staple 70 sheets without breaking a sweat. - Has a nice, professional look to it. - The novel base-plate bends the staples in a way that smooths things out quite nicely on the back of the paper. This occurs with 5 sheets or 50 sheets. - I could not make it jam. (I stomped on the top lever with my foot, hard and fast, and it didn't phase it - not recommended) Cons: - This thing is huge. I mean it is a Godzilla stapler. It is almost intimidating. I feel like I am compensating for something. - A mix of high quality materials and cheap plastic worry me about long term durability. - Loud. (It is assisted after all) Detailed Review: It really does everything that it is advertised to do. I have no worries that I will have a job that it can't handle. The black areas on the stapler are rubberized and feel good to the touch. The Swingline emblem is cheap plastic and I am suspicious that it might "flake" one day in the future. I have had no problems with the stapler slide release button or loading staples (USE OPTIMA HIGH CAPACITY STAPLES - they are cost effective and work great). The silver areas are also plastic, although it doesn't both me as much as the orange base. The orange base is made of a cheaper plastic and you can really "see" that as opposed to the silver area. I think they did this to reduce the overall weight of the stapler, given its size. As to the size, I have no idea why it needed to be this large. From a design perspective it isn't ergonomically necessary to be that large. I deducted one star for the cheap materials. Otherwise it is a wonderfully performing product. However, if you don't need to routinely staple documents of over 40 pages... then get the smaller Swingline Optima 40.

Beautiful stapler that works perfectly
Can handle a wide range of numbers of pages with perfect stapling each time. Stapling is effortless for smaller documents. Looks beautiful. I was so frustrated with the staplers in the copying room at work that I bought my own to handle larger documents.
