Thorough and informative
Despite the sort of campy title, this book is the real deal. I've read 2-3 other books on the topic and honestly, I felt cheated; they were little more than bloated guides full of cliches that could be summed up in about three sentences. Not this book. From initial setup to the types of projects you can expect to encounter freelancing to how much to charge, etc, etc, secrets of a freelance writer is a treasure trove of information for beginning and intermediate freelancers. One con I noticed, is that some of the technology he mentions when discussing computers, software, etc is very outdated. I think he actually talks about a floppy disk at one point.*NoteI've applied one of the ideas mentioned in the book as a proposal to a client within days of reading and I expect a big project. Worth it.

Gotta have it.
SECRETS OF A FREELANCE WRITER by Bob Bly is a bit of rehash. Yes, I know, this is a thrid edition and is supposed to be an updated rehash, but there is also a lot of content here from some of Bly's other books, such as The Copywriter's Handbook. The thing is, there is also enough new and valuable content here to make this another "must read" for copywriters. This book also very closely mirrors Peter Bowerman's Well-Fed Writer with much of the same content. That's not necessarily a bad thing and just adds confirmation to the advice being given.I wont begin to talk about what you might take away from this book. Different people are going to take away different ideas. But suffice it to say, you WILL learn a lot here. Even though this plate has leftover vegetables, the meat is hot off the grill.

Topnotch Writer
This author, Robert W. Bly, is one of my gurus. I have purchased many informational products from his company and keep them in my much-used reference library.I recently purchased this book and love it. It's well written with excellent guidelines and examples. I keep coming back to his books because they leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding out what I need to do next. My new career in this field of information technology would have many learning gaps without Robert Bly's excellent books, including this one.

An excellent resource for both aspiring and experienced copywriters alike.
This book is the perfect guide to setting up, operating and maintaining a successful Freelance Copywriting Business. From types of projects to project management, how to set up your office and the electronic technology needed, and how to gain clients and what to charge for the various types of assignments, this is the definitive sourcebook on "the nuts & bolts" of successfully launching and running a Freelance Copywriting Business. Exponentially worth far more than the $10.00 + Shipping cost I paid for it! And, written by Bob Bly who, in my opinion, is in the top-tier of most successful freelance copywriters in the world, this is information that has been tried, tested and proven to work--a culmination of Bob's 30+ years of experience in the copywriting industry--and it's an invaluable reference book that every aspiring copywriter should own for their personal library.-Burton B., Tennessee

Worthwhile for the new writer
Depending on where you're at in your freelance writing career, this book may either be incredibly valuable... or incredibly redundant. The author is well-versed in the content area, having walked-the-walk, and provides a ton of actionable content for readers. On the other hand, if you've been around the block for awhile, most of the information provided will be fairly common sense. It's worth taking a look if you're new in the field, not so much if you know what you're doing.

Secrets of a Freelance Writer as timely as ever
Bob Bly wrote the latest edition of "Secrets of a Freelance Writer" in 2006 however this book is as timely in 2016 as when he wrote it.The only thing that might have changed is the titles subhead "How to Make $100,000 a Year or More" might have an even greater emphasis on MORE!As the back cover of the paperback claims, with no exaggeration, and knowing Bob with extreme modesty, "Secrets of a Freelance Writer has long been the authoritative guide to making big money as a commercial freelance writer...writing ads, annual reports, brochures, catalogs, newsletters, direct mail, web pages, CD's, press releases and other projects for corporations, small business,.....etc."It is valuable for the brand new freelancer as well as a veteran copywriter looking for extra ways to make an income. With testimonials by the greats such as Joe Vitale and Ray Edwards all I can say is pickup a copy for yourself today and see why this book is just that good!

Provides great advise
Had this book a longtime on my wishlist. Finaly got it.I like the way it's written. It's very clear, and well structured. Full of advises and tips. I especially liked chapters 5 and 6, on "Setting your fees" and "Finding your Markets". But the appendices are really amazing! List of fees (!), Sample contracts (!), Sample promos, model documents,.... you can just use!!!! I mean if you ever wanted to make a jump-start with writing,... this will certainly help.

This book is full of great information and very interesting
This book is full of great information and very interesting. But it is also severely outdated. In a chapter on "Setting Up Your Office" Bly says the writer needs a computer with a floppy disk drive. When was this chapter last updated? Supposedly 2006. Floppy disk drives were irrelevant in.. 94? The major problem here is that I now have no confidence in the remainder of the book. Is it all outdated? I didn't buy this book in the 1993, I don't expect information from 1993. And even though I like a lot of this book, that one chapter makes me wonder whether the whole thing is as outdated and outmoded as Bly's floppy disk drive.
