This description say map type is north america - does this mean it is not suitable for central and eastern europe which is where i wish to use it ?

It should work everywhere. I used it multiple times in UK without any issues. I bought and activated the subscription and had good signal. Actually you can also check the Garmin Explorer app to see the maps provided as well. So far I am happy.

What is the monthly suscription cost please and will it work in the UK??

Yes it will work in UK. When you first use it you must create an account with Garmin as in order to use your inReach® Mini device, you must first activate it. You can find the subscription plans on Garmin's explore .com website.

Is this waterproof? Would it survive being in salt water?

This unit has an IPX7 water rating

can i upload routes from komoot onto the inreach?

This is a GPS Satellite Communicator, not to be confused with a Handheld GPS with mapping. You cannot upload routes to this product. If you want a product that has the functionality of this device with mapping and route finding, I suggest you look at the Garmin GPSMAP® 67i.
